6 days in Edinburgh

Hi everybody, we are coming to Edinburgh to take part in the Marathon in May, and staying there for six days. We would welcome any suggestions on how best to spend the week, sightseeing, bus tours, etc . Should not be TOO exhaustive as we have the marathon to run on Sunday.

I'm going to ask a silly question, but here goes : what about the weather in late May ? Would a day trip to Glasgow be feasible ?

Thanks to all

A day trip to Glasgow is zero problem - lots of people commute! Less than an hour, city-centre to city-centre on the train, a little longer on the bus.

Weather? This is Britain, so no-one knows. Temperatures in May run 5-15C average, so, unless you are running, either a light or mid-weight sweater will be needed. The occasional shower is quite likely, so a light raincoat might come in handy, too.

As for things to do, there is plenty to keep you busy for a week - check the other pages here and come back with any specific questions!

Edinburgh should keep you busy for at least 2 full days, there is so much to see and do but you may perhaps take a day trip to St Andrews or Stirling, the latter easily reaches by train from Edinburgh so no need to drive and the former by train and then bus/taxi. It really depends what you want to see and what your interests are...

A day trip to Glasgow is easy by train. Once there the hop on hop off bus will take you to all the main tourist highlights.

Weather in May and June is probably less rainy than in July and August, and Edinburgh's on the east therefore drier anyway. I'd expect, all things being equal, end of May, dry weather with part cloud. And nothing like as hot and dry as Malta :-)

Start by getting a ticket for one of the city tours, to get your bearings. Hop on and off and visit:

The Castle

The Royal Mile

Holyrood

The Scottish Museum

The National Gallery

The Gallery of Modern Art

The Royal Yacht Britannia

Princes Street Gardens

Shopping on George Street

The Botanic Gardens, Inverleith

That should keep you busy for a day or three, without taking you outside the city boundaries. Lots more in Edinburgh or round about if you tell us what your interests are ... or what food you like.

Arthur's Seat itself makes a good leg-stretcher (up to 200m ascent; as many miles as you think appropriate on road or grass or track) if you're keeping yourself road-ready, and you'll see the start and the first third of the route.
