Festival 2012

We will be spending a couple of days at the Fringe festival in August as first timers. We're getting tickets to maybe just a couple of events for each day in advance and then intend to just wander and see what's on when we're there. Are there any particular areas where there's things like street theatre/music etc going on? I'm visiting the website regularly but any insider info would be appreciated.

Thanks!

You will find free street theatre at Mound Plazza and on the High Street between George IV Bridge and North Bridge. However this is the biggest arts festival in the world so you will find things happening all over the city. Sign up for the various festivals that are happening when you are in Edinburgh. http://www.edinburghfestivals.co.uk/festivals

If you are into 'Stand Up' comedy there is also the 'Laughing Horse' shows held in various pubs and clubs around the city centre. These shows are FREE, BUT you are asked for a contribution if you like the act(s). Generally they are high quality because if they are no good they can't afford to come and not get paid, so it is worth trying out a few. You also get a number of free acts/bands normally at 'The Pear Tree' in the court yard. Being the Edinburgh festival also means it is 'The Rainy Season' Bright sunshine one minute Thunderstorms the next so lightweight waterproof something that you can take on and off quickly or a good old fashioned brolly is a good idea.

Comedy theatre and music figure largest at the festival, bit all the arts are covered. Although Edinburgh will be frantic during this period the place is big enough that you'll find pubs and cafes to relax in, and you'll find show reviews in local papers and magazines. Sadly if a performance is really good the word gets round fast and it'll be fully booked. There are so many events on that the average audience is probably 20-40, and you'll find decent shows to go to. In many cases excellent ones with no-one looking after their publicity! Don't forget the Main Festival is also on (starts a week later) if you like 'proper' music, ballet or whatever.

If you push it you can do 5 or 6 shows a day. Start saving now!

Outside St Giles on the Royal Mile is what looks like a chaotic collection of artists touting their events (but is in fact highly organised by fringe staff)

Pubs and Cafes: the ones with loads of seats outside on the Royal Mile are OK but generally not a patch on those further down the mile or off on the side streets. TA will give you good advice there.
