Parking in Edinburgh

We are driving around the UK in Sept/Oct and will be staying in Edinburgh for a few nights. As we will have a car does anyone have any advice about hostels that have parking available or nearby? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The hostels are mostly centrally located. Few places in the centre have their own parking and overnight parking costs typically £25-30.

Consider somewhere such as one of the Travelodge budget hotel chain locations outside the centre. At that time of year, they will be little more expensive that hostels, and provide free parking. The cost of a day ticket on the buses (£3.50 per adult) won't make a major dent in your budget and you will probably need to use the buses anyway. Visitors invariably remark postively on the high standard of Edinburgh buses.

The Cameron Toll location (Craigmillar Park) is particularly good, being relatively close to the centre (less than two miles) and on 7 bus routes, so you won't have to wait more than a minute or two to catch one. There are also many good and inexpensive B&Bs in that area.

We got the Travelodge at the airport for £15 per room per night, earlier this year. It's got parking and is on a good bus route

You mentioned 'hostel' - you could try the SYHA which is at the top of Leith Walk. Although LW is a major road, there are lots of side street and *overnight* parking is not too difficult. There are hostels on the High Street and elsewhere and parking is really difficult. And driving round the centre of town is difficult: loads of roadworks and closures. Daytime on-street parking is metered, you can't stop for more than a couple of hours, there are too many cars for the spaces available ...

There are five Travelodges fairly near the centre of town; quite a few more overall. Not all travelodges have parking! The one on St Mary's Street does, but not many places and $15 a day. The one at Cameron Toll seems the best compromise to me.

There are multi-story carparks - for example at the top of Leith Walk (greenside) or near the Castle (Castle Terrace)

Just fleshing out the reasons why it's probably easier to avoid the centre of town. Bus access into town is simple.

Travel Lodge at Cameron Toll which is 15mins by bus from city centre and has free parking. If you only book one night at a time they do doubles from £15 a night
