Transfer from EDI to Apex International Hotel

Greetings: My college-age son is spending the coming spring semester in St. Andrews. He's arriving on his own, a little later than the other students and needs to get from EDI to Apex International Hotel. His flight arrives around 8:00 on a Tuesday morning. I know there are multiple ways to get into the city, I am looking for the most direct route from the airport to the hotel so he won't have to haul his suitcase from place to place, can get there quickly, and without breaking the bank. Suggestions?

Why does he have to go to the hotel? With the costs of getting to the hotel, staying overnight, getting to St Andrews it's going to be as cheap to get a St Andrews taxi company to pick him up from the airport. Even cheaper to take the Airdirect747 bus at Edinburgh Airport to Ferrytoll Park & Ride for the coach to St Andrews (X59/X60)

Good points from the previous posters, but to answer the question as put, the least expensive and practical way to get to that hotel is to take the number 35 bus, alight at Forrest Road (the driver will point it out), and walk down Candlemaker Row to the Grassmarket. 200-300m distance, downhill, a couple of entries, but no major roads to cross.

Taxi is the most direct route. Otherwise take the airport bus to Waverley station (£3.50) then a short taxi ride from there (£5)- it is walkable but a bit if a hike up and down hills with luggage. http://www.flybybus.com/

Thanks so much for the responses, I'll pass the options on to him. Would there be traffic at that hour that would cause the taxi to take longer and/or cost much more than mentioned?

He has his orientation at the hotel, that is why that is his destination.

He will be travelling into town pretty much at the height of the daily influx, and unfortunately the suburban traffic in Edinburgh is worst on the west (airport) side. That said, traffic is simply slow rather than jammed solid. The taxi driver will take the best route and the extra cost of any waiting time is unlikely to be more than a few pounds.
