Parking near the George hotel Edinburgh

Hi we are travelling to Glasgow next weekend from the fri to sun. We need to drive but have read there is no where near to park the car. What would u recommend we do? Also we are a young couple looking for good food, drinks and shopping. Where can u recommend near the hotel?

If You are going to Glasgow, why ask about The George in Edinburgh!

Ok Typo maybe ;))

If you just want to wander about the City in Edinburgh .

I would suggest you leave your car at home and get the coach/ bus or train from Girvan.Or Buchanan Street Bus station Glasgow (still a problem for parking though)

If you need the car for part of your journey, park "free" on the outskirts of Edinburgh.

Possibly Maybury or Corstorphine area. then get bus from there into George Street

LRT local buses numbers 26 ,31, 12, also Firstbus have a a few on the route.

Around £1.50 single fare, and also of course concession passes will be valid.

Unless the George can help you out.

Parking in the town for 3 days will be expensive.

Near the hotel there are an abundance of bars and restaurants to choose from.

Very central is the George.

Regards

Mick

Hi yes obviously Glasgow is a typo. :-)) The subject box says George hotel Edinburgh. We need to take the car as transport from Girvan is rubbish. Need to leave and be back certain times. Read some threads that said to park at airport? Or there is a free carpark on Dublin street free 5.30 on fri but not sure how close this is or how to get there.

Wallyford park and ride would take you further away than my suggestions earlier ;)

Dublin Street is not far from The George

Hotel reception will help you with directions

You could park on London Road if you arrive after 5.30pm on the Friday. Parking there is 8.30-5.30 Mon to Friday. There is usually plenty of space there and it is 1 mile from the hotel though tramworks make navigating there a bit tricky

There are a number of park and rides. Most are free; a couple allow overnight parking, which is I guess where the Wallyford idea came from. Hermiston is at least on the right side of town, though you can drive the city bypass to Wallyford, because you can park more than 24 hrs; others can be used more than 24 hours, with permission; good luck in getting an answer from the council :-) All Park and rides have bus or train services into town.

Option two would be to park at the airport, which will cost. 100 bus to Waverley is your nearest to the George.

Option three would be to park in the suburbs - somewhere like Murrayfield [or Maybury / Costorphine as mentioned, though Corstorphine gets busy] - outwith the areas where street parking is controlled. Again, bus into the centre of town

Option four would be to find a multi-story carpark. Your nearest would be the St James Centre, or the Omni Centre, both off Leith Street, not a million miles from the George Hotel.

Option five is street parking. You're OK in the evenings but would have to be aware of Saturday restrictions, which apply in the morning or afternoon as well depending on area. The Hotel can advise regarding that and the easiest places for street parking. Although it's a busy area, with patience you will find something on George Street or St Andrews Square for Friday night, until you can find something a bit more flexible. And there are some back roads with a few parking spaces e.g. Thistle Street, parallel to George Street.

PS Although ST James is a shopping centre, it's not the greatest. Multrees Walk is quite posh and George St/Princes Street is where most people go [or to shopping malls much further out]. George St/Hanover St have LOADS of places to eat. If you want to venture elsewhere to eat/shop get back to us.

Parking in central Edinburgh is a pain but no completely impossible.

If you have not booked the George already, look at the Knight Residence 5 minutes walk to Grassmarket or Princes Street and secure parking in their own car park for which you get a security key to open the gates from the comfort of your car.

Re Waverley Parking...

just did a dummy booking from 16.00 on Friday until 14.00 on Sunday and it came up as £7 :)

I'd bite their hand off for that. Waverley is 5 mins from the george.
