Alternative to left luggage at Edinburgh Waverley

Hello - I know this has been asked previously, so apoloiges for the repeat.

Are there any legitimate alternatives to the left luggage facility at Edinburgh Waverley?

They are now charging £9 an item for up to 24 hours.

We will be in Edinburgh for a morning in early July, coming in on the overnight train and then picking up a hire car around mid day (therefore leaving bags with accommodation is not an option).

However £18 to leave our two bags (for about 3 hours!) is prohibitive.

Grateful for any suggestions :)

Edinburgh bus station is 5 minutes from Waverley, and would be a lot cheaper for 3 hours

Left luggage at Waverley is scandalous. Charging per item is cost effective for them, but unhelpful for travellers. Depending on the size of your bags, you could fit them into a single locker in the bus station and save a lot of money.

Thanks Abs :) one of the bags will be a relatively light suit carrier, so we could keep that if necessary. As you say though, hopefully that and a small case would fit in a locker. and I really don't want to pay for "up to 24 hours" for what will be about 3 hrs

I think they have free lockers (donation to charity?) at the National Gallery downstairs opposite the cafe (East Princes St Gardens entrance) - Open daily from 10am to 5pm (7pm on Thursdays).

Shocking rip-off. We wanted to leave 3 small bags for 2 hours and that would have cost us £27. After a great break in Scotland, our last couple of hours in Edinburgh was spent lugging our bags around rather than pay the extortionate fee. Terrible service!

Hi there - we did in fact use the bus station, and it was substantially cheaper. we fit two bags into one of the larger lockers, and i believe it cost about £3

I used the bus station too and found it excellent.

Small, medium and very large cases, reasonably central too. Easy to get to from the airport bus stop on Waverley Bridge.

If you just need a place to stash your hand luggage for a few hours, you can use the lockers at the centrally-located National Gallery (open 10am-5pm, free entry) - they are self-service, cost just £1.

Obviously their lockers are intended for gallery visitors. So don't make it too obvious you're staching and dashing. They worry about security like everyone else does nowadays.
