Flight From London to Edinburgh

How far in advance do I have to be at one of the London airport's for a flight to Edinburgh? I am planning a trip in May 2014 and want to take a day to go to Edinburgh. It is all the time I can allow, unfortunately.

Take an overnight train (sleeper) up, and a late train back. Ora very early morning train up, and late train back.

Unless you fly from London city airport first thing in the morning, when getting there 45 minutes ahead of time is sufficient and the journey short so you can be relatively confident about getting to the airport on time, once you factor in travel time to and from both airports, and extra time needed to be there in advance, and security delays, and the longer travel out to one of the other airports (LCY being the exception), train is as fast as flying since its city-centre to city centre, and an overnight train is even faster, effectively it's instantaneous.

Virgin also fly the route now

Take the sleeper train up and back - saves two night's accommodation costs and means you are in Edinburgh between 7:00am and 11:00pm so you can get a good breakfast, see the sights AND take in a show / pub / meal / concert / whatever before heading back south.

It also means you don't have to get up at Godforsaken O'Clock to pay for a taxi to get you to the airport in time for the first flight of the day

Minimum check in time can be as little as 20 minutes (if you fly from London City), but none of us would ever advise planning to arrive that late. At Heathrow, you must have cleared the security checkpoint 35 minutes before your flight - if your later than that your booking is automatically cancelled.

There are also flights from Gatwick Stansted Luton and Southend, but before you book an early flight from any of those airports you need to investigate how you'll get to the airport at stupid-o-clock, and how much that will cost you.

In summary, the limiting factor isn't really the check in time, it's how you'd get from your London accommodation in time for an early flight.

Get the overnight Caledonian Sleeper train from London Euston to Edinburgh Waverley. See www.scotrail.co.uk for details. The sleeper train departs every day of the week apart from Saturday evenings. There are showers at the stations, the beds are comfortable (so long as you are not VERY tall) and it is also possible to get a meal on board the train.

With all the security checks going on these days, you would be on the safe side checking in 1 hr in advance! There are many early morning flights leaving London to Edinburgh. If you are staying there overnight then you can return next day whenever you want to but otherwise the return flight for the same day would be before 21:00 Hrs. It's best if you fly with BA, VA or Aer Lingus. Have your cab scheduled for your pick up and drop to ensure you get at least 12 hrs to spend in the city.

It's quite possible to do a day trip to Edinburgh by air or rail, but whether it would be enjoyable would depend on the person. Depending on where the OP is travelling from, air may be quicker than the train. On the other hand, the timings may not suit, and rail might the preferable option.

The recommendations for the sleeper train are very good ones, and it's what I would probably go for, at least in one direction. Taking the sleeper to Edinburgh would allow a full day in London, then a full day in Edinburgh before catching an evening train back.
