Holiday Inn express Cowgate or Residence Inn Quartermile

We are in the beginning stages of planning our trip and found The HIE and Marriott Residence Inn with similar prices. Is one in a nicer area than the other? Which would be more convenient to the major sights? We will be walking and using local transportation to get around Edinburgh. Thanks for any advice you could provide.

Whilst they are both convenient for the major sights I would opt for the Residence Inn, Quartermile.

It's in a nicer area with better public transport links and lots more options for eating, drinking and socialising within a couple of minutes walk.

Cowgate is geopraphically closer to the Royal Mile and the "major sights", it is perhaps not as open and airy as the lovely Quartermile location. Quartermile is a brand new complex (moulded into the remains of an old hospital), and it is located right beside Meadows Park. It is only a 5-10 minute walk to the Royal Mile. Cowgate is "below" the royal mile, and it can get rowdy at night (having lived there!).

Abs :)
