Central Location Edinburgh

Will be traveling to Edinburgh in September and need suggestions on areas to stay where we can get around walking or using public transportation to see the sites. We will not have the use of a car. Additionally, we will be taking the train to London so that will also be consideration.

Edinburgh really is a very compact city and almost all of the hotels are within walking distance of the main visitor areas. Furthermore, we have an excellent, frequent and inexpensive bus service. There is no need to be overly concerned about hotel location - pick somewhere that suits your budget and taste and has the facilities you like.

The London train leaves from the Waverley Station. That is a very central location and there are a number of first-class hotels as well as several mid-price ones and some backpacker hostels in the vicinity. But be aware that the station itself is at the lowest point of the city centre, so everything is uphill from there - and Edinburgh has no shortage of hills.

As does the bus for the airport. There are a dozen or so hotels within 10 minutes walk of Waverley station, at least 5 of which are less than 5 minutes walk, of various price brackets - see the hotels link at the top of this page.

Hi, you don't say what your budget is but we like staying at the George Hotel in George street, great location, a few minutes walk to Princes street and a good choice of bars and restaurants nearby.

To see the sites, try the red open top hop on hop off bus tour. It takes you to most of the top attractions and can be joined at Waverley or many locations on the old and new town

I stayed at the Best Western Bruntsfield last year, and I'm staying there again in May. It's on the other side of the Royal Mile from the station. It takes about 20 minutes to walk from the hotel to the Royal Mile, mainly across parkland.

dexterVirginia,

Edinburgh is a cute compact town and imo extremely walkable unless youre handicapped in some manner.

Just beware that much of Europe still uses cobblestone on their roads so it can get "slippery when wet".

I stayed on Princes street but probably more than one, it woudlnt be fun.
