The O.P. asked for places to visit, he did not specify what he wanted to do, so hiking around the Highlands may not be a must do for him, but he can let us know.

Frances-Jane,

How long does it take to get to Falkland via train? Which station would one use? Cost?

My sisters and I are planning to visit Scotland in October and they want to do an escorted bus tour. I say we can base ourselves in Edinburgh and take day trips. Falkland looks absolutely charming and interesting and I would love to see it. Hopefully I can convince them to DIY!

Thanks for your advice.

The train you would need would be the Edinburgh to Aberdeen train and get off at Ladybank and then a bus or taxi to Falkland. It would probably take about 1 hour. If you could hire a car, then Fife is lovely, all the little fishing villages, like Pittenweem and Anstruther, the latter has a famous fish and chip shop. Lovey quaint pllaces with nice little shops including Antique Shops. Then you have Lower Largo birthplace of Alexander Selkirk who was the inspiration for Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe. If I were you I would Google these place and get in touch with the Fife Tourist Board for lots of information. Fife is a great place for day visits Falkland is beautiful and the Palace is well worth a visit. Most tourist rush to St.Andrews, but as someone who lived in Fife for 6 years. I know the places I liked the best.

Thanks for the information Frances-Jane. Right now my head is just swimming with the possibilities of things to see and do in Scotland. I will suggest Fife also as a place we may visit. Already I am thinking that we don't have enough days. Good thing we are not going until October and so we can really plan out an itinerary that maximizes our time.

Depends a lot on when in October you are going. The end of October sees the clocks going back so darker nights and shorter days, also a lot of the tourist attractions close at the end of October, so hopefully you are going earlier in October.

I take it you will check your ticket and know whether you can get off and on or need separate tickets. They vary immensely - as they probably do in your part of the island...

You will need to translate your question into English unless someone on here can understand (Catalan?)
