Itinerary - royal edinburgh military tattoo/Distillery tours

We will be in edinburgh the middle of July 2014. we are looking for tickets to the royal edinburgh military tattoo show. is there a specific website that can helps us get tickets? the ones we have been trying are sold out. is there a "crags list" or "ebay" site that might be able to get us tickets?

Another question - we want to tour a distillery like Macallan or Glenfiddich or Glenlevelt? we know it is outside of Edinburgh so is there any tours or any suggestions how to easily get there.

We will be in Edinburgh for 3 days so any suggestions on the itinerary will be greatly appreciated.

The Tattoo doesn't start until 1st August so no wonder you can't find tickets for mid July! http://www.edintattoo.co.uk

The three whiskies that you mentioned are all Speyside malts, Speyside is quite a long journey from Edinburgh. http://www.scotlandwhisky.com/distilleries/ Do you want to specifically want to visit one or more of the ones you named or just a distillery?

If you are only in Edinburgh for three days and you want to experience a Whisky distillery tour then think about Glenkinchie Distillery which is the closest to Edinburgh. www.discovering-distilleries.com/glenkinchie

If you want to try some of the many whiskies produced in Scotland visit the likes of the Whiski Rooms in Bank Street ( the Mound) as they have tasting sessions available.

Go to Glenkinchie. Macallan, Glenlivet and Glenfiddich are close to a 4 hour drive from Edinburgh -6-7 hours by public transport.

Best is to take a cab there and get the cabbie to pick you up a couple of hours later (contact the distillery for tour times). You can get there with public transport, but this is a slow and roundabout way of getting there (1.5 hours) compared to the 20 minute cabride.

If you want a nice day out including Glenkinchie, took at the Timberbush tours website; they have a tour with includes Glenkinchie, Rosslyn Chapel and Jedburgh Abbey.

If time is pressing, a cab to Glenkinchie sounds good. The cab ride will probably be a bit more than 20 mins from Edinburgh but that's the right ballpark time. The cab driver can go for a nice cup of tea in Pencaitland while you're enjoying the tour.

Various combos of public transport are possible but I don't think any of them go past the door: I think the nearest will be through Haddington / Pencaitland: Glenkinchie is on a backwater 'B' road. But there is a local taxi service based in Haddington : www.fortunetravelservices.co.uk/glenkinchie/

For your information Glenkinchie Distillery will from the 16th June - October be trialling a mini bus return tour from Edinburgh City Centre and combining that with a tour of the distillery. Prices are apparently from £20 and you can either contact the distillery by phone 01875 342 012 to book this service or you may wish to contact them by email at glenkinchie@diageo.com
