ideas for a day trip

My husband and I will be in Edinburgh from Oct 8 - Oct 12. It turns out that we will now be leaving on the evening of the 12th, rather than in the morning and with a little shuffling we now have an open day in our itinerary. I'm trying to decide if we should maybe attempt a day trip from Edinburgh to get more of a feel for the Scottish highlands outside of the city. Is there a good place to do a quick day trip to that would give us a feel for the highlands and wouldnt be too difficult to manage on public transportation? I was thinking Stirling, but wasnt sure if there were other good options?

On a somewhat un-related question - how far in advance should we arrive at the EDI airport for our flight to Paris? Our flight is at 17:55 on a Sunday.

thank you for all of your help!

You could have a look at tours by Rabbies and Timberbush.

One of their shorter trips might suit.

I would arrive 2hrs ahead of flying. That weekend maybe busier than usual as most schools in Scotland will be on holiday and a lot of people may be going away.

In October it will be getting dark early so you don't want to sit on a coach for hours coming back in darkness. So don't pick a long journey such as Loch Ness or you will spend most of your time on the coach. Try the Trossachs which are nearer and IMHO much nicer.
