Driving from Edinburgh to York, stopping at Housestead Fort

Driving down from Edinburgh to York. We hope to stop at Housestead fort. Is A68 the best route? Will there be a lot of traffic during a week day and is any part of the drive difficult? Thanks in advance

The A68 is quite a busy little road, but if you avoid the commuter times it shouldn't be a problem. Parts of the A68 were actually part of Dere Street, a Roman road. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dere_Street

A nice place to stop for lunch is The Buccleuch Arms Hotel http://www.buccleucharms.com at St Boswells,

Its a nice scenic drive down the A68 unless you suffer motion sickness, as already stated it follows part of the old main Roman road, dead straight but up & down some quite steep gradients, but if you want scenery a much nicer road than the A1, If you are doing it very soon the main problem might be getting stuck behind farm vehicles bring in the harvest as this is a single lane each way road, lots of bends making overtaking possibly difficult

For a stop, Melrose is also a possibility, a very attractive little Borders town with some good eating options.Lovely Melrose Abbey is in the middle of things, where The Bruce's heart is buried.

The A68 is one of the most densely speed camera-packed roads in Scotland. As others have said, it's a nice drive the further south you go from Edinburgh and quite fast (hence the monitoring).

I used to drive the east coast route when heading to the South of England. I always reckoned that the A68 was slightly quicker overall compared with the A1; however route planning websites don't agree with me. And it's certainly a lot handier for Housesteads. Both routes attract some heavy traffic.

A longer alternative might be to take the A7 to Carlisle, then to follow the A69 and B6318 eastwards; these roads run parallel to the wall and will take you past other Roman sites e.g. the Birdoswald, the Roman Army Museum, Vindolanda. Depends whether you're a Hadrians Wall geek :-)
