Looking for Golf and Scotch recomendations

Visiting Edinburgh Sept 29/30 would love to find some options for Golf and Scotch tasting (distillery visit?) relatively close by. Staying at the Sheraton Grand Hotel & Spa.

Open to renting a car if necessary but would ideally find something with via public transport or shuttle services.

Anyone have any experience with either?

Please advise

many thanks

There are dozens of courses surrounding Edinburgh, from cheap and cheerful, to exclusive championship courses, where women are not allowed....

What's your preference? Probably worth browsing a golf site and learning about some of the popular courses and decide if they are for you.

There will be a huge number of companies that can tailor a visit to your needs. It is a major attraction...

Great, thanks for the reply,

Looking for something on the higher end of quality, something that will offer a true memorable experience. I have found many listings but always appreciate the value of first hand referrals. Could you list a few of the best courses for quality and experience. I can make contact from there.

thank you

Sorry, I've only played in Ayshire and Arran - Troon, Turnberry, Prestwick, Belleisle, Gailes, Brodick, Shiskine, Lamlash.... Those sort of places.

Try Muirfield, Gullane, North Berwick, etc. But I haven't played any of these. Then of course, there is St Andrews, with several magnificent courses, eg Kingsbarns.

I feel sure there is probably help for you on the visitscotland.com site.

Peterscot is opening up the debate for the west coast,

One of the best packages known to man ( for the golf enthusiast ) is the "fly into Prestwick , get a chopper over to Campbeltown, play machrihanish, then Dunaverty, back on the chopper to islay and play the machrie ". Whilst you're on the island, taste all the very best malts that god intended !

Oh please don't tell everyone. It's bad enough with that Trump guy buying the place up......

BTW I think you could do a. Direct flight from Glasgow to Macrihanish...... Or ferry to Arran to play Shiskine, probably the best 12-hole course anywhere, then another ferry to the Mull of Kintyre for Macrihanish....

You are only limited by your imagination ;-)

The best options for golf are in East Lothian. i would go for links courses as they will be very different from what you are used to

Gullane no 1 is a classic links test with great views over the Firth of Forth once you get up the hill. It is good enough to host the Scottish open next year. Gullane is a lovely village with plenty of good options for food/a pint after.

North Berwick West is excellent too. It is an Open qualifier-some unusual features-dry stone walls on some fairways-the 15th is a classic par 3 whose design has been copied many times. NB is a pleasant small town with lovely beaches and views to the Bass Rock

Dunbar is another links course and a it quirky but runs right by the sea and is an excellent test of golf.

Choose one of those 3 and you won't go wrong

All are in easy reach of Edinburgh

You can get to North Berwick by train and the course is a short walk away (the West Links). You can hire clubs.

As already mentioned lot of world class courses in East Lothian, but also one of the best distilleries at Pencaitland. Glenkinchie a wonderful pale single malt is produced here and you can reach it on the 'Lothian Country 113 bus just a few minutes walk down the road from your hotel. If you care for a wee warm up you can play the 36 hole 'Pitch & Put' course only 5 minutes walk from your hotel For FREE at Bruntsfield Links and quench your thirst at the oldest 19th Hole in Scotland 'The Golf Tavern' reputed to have been in business since 1475, however that may be a bit far fetched as we don't think it was built till 1504 but still worth looking in. It sits just beside the 'Starters Hut.
