Best parking when short on time

Hi, we will be driving from the Cairngorms to Edinburgh to return our rental car there by 4:45 pm.

We decided to go to St. Andrews as our last place to visit before we leave Scotland (we took a day trip from Edinburgh up north so please do not suggest other destinations that are more on our way...we have seen them already).

Obviously, we will not have that much time even if we leave Aviemore at 7 am.

Where is the best place to park in St. Andrews to see the town, the university campus, the castle and cathedral so that we do not lose precious time for sightseeing?

The public car park next to the R&A Golf Museum is pretty convenient.

St. Andrews is small and easy to walk around.

Large parts of the Cathedral are fenced off so don't expect too much of that element of your visit. As has been said, St Andrews is compact so getting around shouldn't be an issue.

If that car park is full don't worry just keep going past it and head along the beach. There is plenty of parking there and although the walk is slightly further I would suggest you do that rather than go anywhere else. Parking in St Andrews is a bit of a nightmare, mainly because the streets weren't originally built for traffic!

I would suggest when walking back into town, head along The Scores ( The Scores Hotel is on the corner) and you will end up at The Castle with the Cathedral just slightly further on. Just past the Cathedral is the old harbour and pier. Then turn back into town where you can see some of the University buildings in North Street and South Street, both run West back away from the Cathedral. Can I ask when your proposed visit is? I'm just hoping it's not in August when the Lammas Market takes over the town and even parking on the West Sands is limited.😕

When I was in St Andrews recently there were temporary traffic lights on Golf Place, as there's a lot of work going on around the buildings near the 18th/1st tees, which caused a bit more traffic congestion.

We had just headed for West Sands and parked up there as the walk along the side of the course with the beach on your other side is lovely. There is also a clean public toilet block which is useful before you start your journey to your next destination. KY16 9XL is the postcode for West Sands Road.
