Train/bus services Dundee to St Andrews for the Open?

I see a post by scottishpunter that there are train and bus services from Dundee to St Andrews for the Open Championship. This sounds very interesting - one could stay in Dundee, potentially more options available and cheaper, and not inconvenient if one has accommodation near the train/bus stop.

Could we have some more details please - who runs them, the location of stops, frequency, cost, a link perhaps.

There are usually "golf link" trains that run to The Open, wherever the venue. For example this year Scotrail ran extra services to Girvan and then a bus to Turnberry. Like St Andrews Turnberry has no railway station adjacent.

The details of this service are posted on the official Open website and also Scotrails.

You would be able to stay in Glasgow or Edinburgh as as well if you wanted to use the service.

St. Andrews is quite small, so I am sure the organisers would prefer that people don't bring there cars as parking will be an issue. In the past there has usually been a service from the train station at Leuchars into St. Andrews or buses direct.

From Dundee St.Andrews is around 18 miles, Leuchars is just over half way, St. Andrews does not have its own station.

If you are a golfer, you might want to consider staying at Carnoustie, as this is on the train line and you will be able to play the Championship course there, with around 10 other courses within easy reach.

The Open was held at Carnoustie 2 years ago and the trains accommodated many thousands of spectators each day. Normally few trains stop at Carnoustie but every train stopped there especially for duration of the event, supplemented by many special trains. I used these special services to attend the Open and the transport was well organised.

Leuchars station is normally served by many more trains than Carnoustie and has a connecting bus every few minutes to St Andrews. Combined rail/bus tickets are available from many stations. For the duration of the 2010 Open many extra trains and buses are likely to be provided - roads and car parking around St Andrews are not designed to cope with such an influx hence rail/bus use will be strongly encouraged.

If you have not yet booked for the Open you might want to start looking at the accommodation options - even in Dundee. There will be hotels in Dundee that are already fully booked.
