York to St. Andrews - Should we stop along the way?

My DH and I are planning a trip to England and Scotland next May. We will start in England visiting family and will be traveling to Scotland by car after a few nights in York. Our first destination was to be St. Andrews for a night then heading for Isle of Skye. We will be stopping along the way for a day or two before staying 2 nights in Portree. We will return to Edinburgh to drop off car and enjoy a few nights there. Leaving Edinburgh by train to London. It looks like quite a drive from York to St. Andrews so I was wondering if I should plan an overnight along the way and if so, where (other then Edinburgh)?

Thanks,

That all depends on what else you want to do. In terms of the actual time needed to drive, it's about five hours, and you can undertake that journey mostly along divided highways (A1/A720/M90/A92) on which average speeds of 60mph are entirely feasible. There are plenty of interesting places to stop on that road, and alternative routes through the Scottish Borders, offering even more, so you will have no difficulty finding enjoyable ways to spend two days. Personally, I would do that, and I would look to stay in the Tweed valley, perhaps Melrose.

However, only you can decide how important it is to your group to press on St Andrews.

About half way would bring you to Alnwick- a lovely town with a Castle (made famous in the Harry Potter movies) , amazing gardens including a poison garden and fabulous fountains, biggest second hand bookshop in the country housed in an old railway station, and lots of cute shops, cafes etc. More than enough for a lovely day out. Also nearby is Bamburgh which again has a huge castle but also benefits from a fantastic beach.

Thank you both for the suggestions. I have never planned a trip trying to see so many places so it gets a bit overwhelming. Now I feel I have a few locations to research. Thanks again!
