Take Away Curry in West End ?

Just moved to Glasgow and living in the West End. Im in the Dumbarton Road area at the bottom of Byres Road. Loving life in the city, but can I find a decent take away curry ? No.

Life would be prefect if anyone could recommend one. Ive tried a couple on Dumbarton Road. Think they share the same kitchen and they were shocking.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks all.

Have you tried Mother India Cafe opposite the Kelvingrove?

What about Balbir's on Church Street just off Byres Road? Not cheap - average price of a main course dish 6.25 but excellent stuff.

Are you on a student budget? If so recommendations might differ. Would steer clear of Taste of the Punjab on Argyle St though.

Hi

Ive only eaten in the restaurant at Mother Indias. I didnt realise they did take aways.

I havent tried the other one you recommended, but will give it a go now.

No budget limitations. Id rather pay a bit extra for something decent.

Thanks

I seem to recall reading that Alex Kapranos lead singer of Fraz Ferdinand used to deliver takeaways for Mother India Cafe in his student days. Here's the takeaway menu online:

http://www.motherindia.co.uk/mic_takeaway.htm

I hadn't realised that they also owned the Wee Curry Shops until I looked at that.

Ashoka on Ashton Lane off Byres Road has a pdf menu on this link:

harlequinrestaurants.com/restaurants/ashoka_…

Can't find an online menu for Balbir's but I they do a leaflet at the restaurant.

Never eaten at Ashoka, but it seems pretty popular.

I second Mother India's Cafe. I like to go there whenever I am in the West End.

I think I can guess which shocking ones you mean about on Dumbarton Road...

I would wholeheartedly recommend Mr India's Balti House on Hyndland Street, near the corner with Dumbarton Road. Best curry in the area by a country mile! Also try eating in there - it's a small, unpretentious place, but friendly (and usually pretty busy - always a good sign).

Would really recommend

Balbirs on Church Street

The Banana Leaf (for southern indian food) on the Old Dumbarton Road.

The Wee Curry Shop - have only tried the ashton lane one.

Have tried mother india twice and was disappointed both times - didn't think it was anything special and the dosa's from the banana leaf were tons better! Am not inclined to give it a third chance...

Balbir's is a perfectly good place but Mr India is superb. A wee bit old-fashioned in decor and ambience but the food is top quality and the staff are terrific.

Just tried a take away from Mr India's following the recommendations here and was impressed. We'll go back and "sit in" soon.

Makes a change from the usual Ashton Lane suspects and was good value too.
