For classy decor and fabulous banquet meal (or a la carte) I recommend Balbirs on Church St. Its on the road that forks to the left just before you reach the bottom end of the Byres Road. It's also highly rated with restaurant critics and The List magazine.

The tandoori salmon, usually offered as a course at the banquet, is amazing!

All of the above are good for Indian food.

Not quite west end but Japanese

You could always try Persian

Japanese? Wudon on Great West Road might fit the bill. Its new and there have been good and not so good reviews in the press, so perhaps teething troubles, but I'd give it a go based on the jolly looking crowds it's packing in.

I "second" the vote for Mother India's Cafe. We tried it for the first time two weeks ago and it was superb. It's tapas, Indian-style and enables sampling of many different dishes. Have been to Balbir's and while good, it's not a patch on Ma India. One thing though...you can't book and may have to queue.....but if you get there around 6.30, shouldn't be a problem.

Third for Mother India. Try the achari prawns. The only bad thing about the place was they would not let me have the recipe. Damn them!!

Ashoka, in Ashton Lane can always be beaten.

Good location though and pleasant service.

The best place for Indian food in the West End is Mother India Cafe. An alternative if you venture a little closer to the city centre is the Tiffin Rooms on Sauchiehall Street near Charing Cross.

There is a Lebanese restaurant on Gibson Street but unfortunately I cannot recommend it as I was disappointed by the quality of the food when I tried it a couple of months ago.

Ichiban on Dumbarton Road in Partick is a good place for Japanese cuisine.

Bon appetit!
