Easiest way it to take the train. Change in Edinburgh and it should take around 2hrs40 mins. Book from 12 weeks in advance of travel to get the best price. Timetables on

Its also quite a scenic route from Newcastle north to Edinburgh

You can also do it via Carlisle by train but you'd probably have to book separate tickets

Another option is to use Megabus via Edinburgh - once again you'd have to book separate tickets or you can mix and match and use a coach for one leg and train for the other

BTW "fastest" and "cheapest" don't go together - it's generally either one or the other

There was some discussion about the 2010 timetables and whether the train would terminate at Edinburgh which would mean a change of train/operator for the last part of the journey.

It is quicker to travel from Newcastle to Edinburgh - then Edinburgh to Glasgow Queen Street than the current through route of Newcastle - Glasgow Central

The proposed timetable change will be from May 2011.

Typical times are 2.43 hours direct and 2.56 changing at Edinburgh so there is nothing in it timewise.

However the through train will provide a more comfortable journey on a long distance train and you don't have to change trains.

You may have no choice but to change at Edinburgh, but it should be a quick change. Anytime ticket prices are just over 50gbp for this route, but can be had for as little as 9.55gbp advance fare singles. It just depends on when yuou buy the ticket and what time you want to travel:
