Glasgow Indian restaurant

We're going to be back in Glasgow in June and want to revisit an Indian restaurant we ate at in 2007, assuming it's still in business, but we can't remember the name. It was located in the University of Glasgow, Kelvingrove Park area; we stayed just off Great Western Road and it was walking distance. Higher quality finishes, 2 levels, we think it had black/white tiled floors but not sure, it had a "techy" club feel, excellent food! We both remember the waiter recommended a spinach side dish that was so good. Thanks for any help you can give us and of course any recommendations for other restaurants too.

I see no-one has recommended Sibbo's. Funny that - I'm not either :-)

I'm another Mother India fan. Something a littl bit different in lovely surroundings. Go on... give it a go!

I am not a Mother India fan. I find it to be smelly, expensive and pretentious. There are nicer Indian/Asian restaurants in Glasgow.

I have never found it smelly but I agree with your other comments. I drove past it a week or so ago on a Tuesday evening and there were people queuing to get in. I would never queue for a meal, especially not a curry, in Glasgow.

Haven't been to the main Mother India restaurant that so many rave about, but like the Mother India Cafe opposite the Kelvingrove Museum.

Their once lovely Wee Curry Shop above Jinty McGintys on Ashton Lane in the West End is another matter altogether. I found it tired, grubby and dusty, the 'white' dinner plates were crackled and stained grey with age, and the whole place looked like it needed a deep clean. Cobwebs ruled the roost in the ladies loo where there was a gaping hole in the wall leading to who knows what; some arachnid abyss? *shivers*

What was smelly? Did you raise the issue with the restarant or more importantly environmental health?

I just thought there was an unpleasant smell in the stairwell as I recall and no, I did not raise it with the management or environmental health. I am not a good complainer and it was just a stale, greasy, curry smell.

Last time we went there, as we approached the entrance from Kelvingrove Street a guys in chef's clothing came out to put something in the bins that they leave on the street. He was mingin' and looked like he had the same gear on for three weeks. This gave me the impression that they were not putting a lot of thought into PR. that was on a public street and it just made me wonder what was going on behind closed doors in the kitchen?

Actually that would have been enough to make me turn back that evening but we were with another couple who wanted to eat there. The experience was not great. As I say I think it is overpriced and pretentious. I have had better curries in many Glasgow restaurants.

"Mother India has the best variety, and the most subtle indian cooking in Glasgow hands down."

Have to disagree - but it is popular, so must be doing something right, or got a good PR machine.

Juggernot does not allow alternative opinion seeseadee. ;o)

I can only tell you what I experienced in Mother India recently and at best it could be described as very ordinary. With regard to cleanliness, let me decide what is clean and what is not. I saw it after all.

Apart from having actually been in India and Sri Lanka I have been eating in Glasgow's Asian Restaurants since about 1968. I have had a "good look aboot" as they say and IMHO Mother India's high ranking position is undeserved.
