Heading out of Glasgow - new M74 link

Coming up to Glasgow in a few weeks time and picking a car up at Central Station to head out to Motherwell. I've looked at the website for the new M74 extension - it says Traffic from City Centre proceed south over the Glasgow Bridge at Jamaica Street, onto Bridge Street (A77), right onto Kingston Street (A8) left onto Tradeston Street and then right onto Nelson Street (A8) proceed west onto Morrison Street then turn left at Patterson Street before turning right joining Wallace Street. Turn left into Dalintober Street and join the M74 on-ramp.

This seems to be taking us west to turn round and head back south/east - is this correct.

Can we do this route? Head south over Bridge St (A77) and turn left somewhere then - From Laurieston Road (A728) southbound at Gorbals turn left into Caledonia Road (A730) and head east following the realigned Rutherglen Road then turn right onto Polmadie Road to meet the new Polmadie Road Junction. Or is it limited access at that junction?

Many thanks, our sat nav is pretty well up to date and shows the new road but as a dotted line.

Either way is fine, although going west first is probably the qiucker, i.e. the Wallace St merge, less lights!

Personally I would head along Waterloo Street onto Kingston Bridge (M8 west bound). Exit the bridge at J20 West Street. From West St turn left onto Wallace Street etc. This map shows how to get from M8 west off ramp to M74 east on ramp:

Thank you Chris and MadScotsman. Chris your map made things easier to understand, Will probably go the Kingston Road way so as not to get caught up in the city centre (Saturday pm), do you know if the road signs are good that way?

Waterloo St is a one way street. Stay in the left hand lane and that will take you straight on to the Kingston Bridge (M8 west) on ramp. There are 5 lanes on the west bound carriageway of the Bridge and the Waterloo St on ramp will bring you on to lane 2.  Lanes 1 and 2 (the 2 inside lanes of the bridge) are lane drops signed "City Centre South" and take you to West Street via the M8 west off ramp which is shown on the map.  You'll have to move over to lane 1 (the inside lane) at some point before reaching the bottom of the M8 west off ramp for the left turn onto Wallace Street. Its fairly straightforward once you're on Waterloo St. Waterloo St to West St should take about 2-3 mins barring hold ups.

One word of caution if it's for a Saturday afternoon. The football season will have started again and the traffic in the past if Rangers are playing at home is usually pretty rotten anywhere south of the river, even on the motorways. Hopefully the new link will ease this substantially. We should see after this coming weekend, fingers crossed for smooth roads on a Saturday afternoon.

I don't think the football should impact on the route being suggested to pick up the new southbound M74.

Thanks for the football info, I did wonder about that. I've checked the fixture lists and both Motherwell and Rangers are away but Celtic are at home at 3pm. Are there any other clubs to be aware of?

No. Only Rangers and Celtic cause any real congestion to the roads but the Celtic traffic wont affect you on the M74. You will get a clear run from the football fans.
