day trips from Glasgow

We will be in Glasgow for 2 weeks in July and would like to take some bus or train day trips. Any ideas?

Edinburgh and Stirling would be the obvious choices for a day-trip by train from Glasgow.

Then there's St Andrews, Inveraray, Pitlochry, and Mallaig, as well as a day out on the world's last sea-going paddle steamer, The Waverley, which sails from Glasgow.

If Edinburgh is not on your itinerary, you definitely could spend a few days there. Stirling is a good choice, too.

Edinburgh is on the list and so is the paddle steamer. I will have to investigate some of the other recommendations too.

If you like modern engineering, you can visit Falkirk as well.

The Ayrshire coast is not far by train. You could go to Largs and have a trip on the ferry over to Millport and end the day with some traditional fish & chips!

Celtygirl, I visited Millport many times as a child. This is another good idea!

my uncle and his wife returned to Glasgow for the first time in 20 years and they were fascinated at the changes on the Clyde. We took them on the ferrybus from Glasgow to Braehead Shopping Centre, had a look round the Maritime Museum, a walk along the boardwalk and then lunch in Braeheads Curling Bar, which is glass fronted with views over the Clyde. We were surprised when they rated this as one of the highlights of their trip.
