It would a bit more to know exactly what Premier Inn you are staying at, there are several in the city so you'll probably want suggestions close to where you're staying.

As a guide to Premier Inns in the city centre and thier proximity to things»

George Square (actually one street behind)

The latest one at the corner of Sauchiehall/West Nile, this one seems to be the most central one.

Charing Cross

Argyle St ( though the quiter end at Anderston handy for Secc)

Ballater St (south of the river with very little nearby in the way of dining etc around it.

Right then you are fairly central for everything.

Problem now is what is open on new years day which will not be a lot!

You will still be able to dine but there is no way any of us can tell you for certain what is open, better to scope out a few options and contact them in advance to see if they are open on the day.

Entertainment could be just as tricky!

I am not sure that any of the pantos will have showings that day, museums will also be shut, cinemas might be open.

If the weather is dry we tend to take a drive down to Loch Lomond and go for a walk but you might not have a car and again there is no public transport that day either.

Looks like the Carnival at the SECC is on again this year and is open on NY Day (www.irn-bru-carnival.com). Look at the "Glasgow Loves Chrismas/Hogmany" website for some other events on in the City centre, e.g. ice rink in George Square (www.glasgowloveschristmas.com).
