Train: Glasgow to Edinburgh

We are planning a 1 night stay in Edinburgh in August (our schedule doesn't allow for 2 nights). The problem is; most hotels & B&B's require a minimum of 2 nights to book at that time of year).

I am considering finding a hotel or B&B in an outlying area (on train route between Edinburgh and Glasgow i.e. Linlithgow).

Any suggestions as to the best way to handle this situation would be appreciated?

PS May be taking in the Tattoo if tickets are still available (haven't checked recently). How late might the trains run between Edinburgh and Glasgow?

There is very little in the way of accommodation in Linlithgow. Its a challenge to find accommodation in Edinburgh during August at affordable prices for one night, but not impossible. Have you tried looking at chains such as holiday inn express, premier inn or travelodges slightly out of town in Leith? Its a cheap, easy and relatively quick commute into the city centre from there.

If you'd like to avoid hugely inflated hotel prices, it might be worth looking at a hotel in glasgow. Trains between the two cities run a bit later during the festival month (usually 12.30am for last train to Glasgow) and take around 50 minutes city centre to city centre. There will be plenty of hotel options available close to Glasgow Queen Street station.

You can check the train timetables for that route here: scotrail.co.uk/content/timetables-connections

Yep Purple is right, the last train arrives in Glasgow around 01:15 during the Festival and they usually have extra coaches to cope with increased demand.

I expect the late night E&G services will also call at Croy, so you could check out the Travelodge at AuchinKilns (Cumbernauld) if you are looking for budget accomodation, it's about a mile away so you'd need to get a local taxi. Other place near Croy Station is the Boat House (http://www.boathousekilsyth.com/) at Auchinstarry which is again about a mile away from the station albeit in the opposite direction from the travelodge.
