Day trip out of the city in January without a car?

We're travelling up for a couple of days of Celtic Connections. It'll be: travel Tuesday; concert Tuesday night; free all day Wednesday; concert Wednesday night; back home Thursday.

For that free Wednesday, I know there's loads to see and do in Glasgow, because we've seen some of them – the Trades Hall and the Necropolis were unexpected pleasures. But I wondered if a trip out to, say, Loch Lomond, or somewhere else nice, would be feasible without a car, getting back in time to freshen up for the concert?

If not, I know there's still plenty in the city that we haven't seen yet. Just fishing for ideas :)

Yes Loch Lomond would be excellent and easily done!

Train every 30 mins to Balloch with a journey time of 43 mins from Queen St (Low Level) Station at only around £6 off peak return (after 0930)

www.scotrail.co.uk for times

Another option if the weather is not kind is New Lanark Unesco World Heritage Site, again around 55 mins on the train from Central Low Level Station at around £8 off peak return.

You can get a train to either Balloch or Tarbet on Loch Lomond (2 rail lines that separate at Dumbarton

www.scotrail.co.uk/timetables-routes/1801

You can connect the two by a combination of bus and/or ferry

Best to check up what's running, and when, it being January

Given their timescale Derek coupled with the fact there are only 3 trains daily to/from Tarbet I would stick with the Balloch option which is part of Glasgow's suburban commuter network.

Also bear in mind there is only about 7 hours of decent daylight!

Thanks, guys. A lot will depend on the weather, of course, but it's good to have a range of options, and that info will be useful.
