Travel between Glasgow and Edinburgh

We will be arriving at Glasgow airport approx 7.30 pm,not sure if we should stay the night there or travel directly to Edinburgh where we will be based for 2-3 days. I would love some advice on the options, train, taxi, bus on the night or hire a car the next morning and have a more leisurely journey seeing some of the country. We are a party of 4 travelling in late June .

Depending on the day of the week you arrive, the train journey from Glasgow Queen Street will take 50 minutes and cost £12.50. From the airport to the city centre you may take the Glasgow 500 Shuttle for the 25 minute journey to the city centre.

Check www.nationalrail.co.uk for train times.

Trains from Glasgow QS to Edinburgh are quicker and slightly more comfortable than the corresponding bus journey; and the rail station is only a few minutes from the bus station.

Therefore I'd agree with travellerplus: take the bus to Buchanan Street and then the train to Edinburgh. Your train stops at Haymarket and Waverley and therefore services W and E central Edinburgh.

If you arrive at the airport at 7.30 you should be clear of the airport, through Glasgow and in Edinburgh by 10 pm.

Taking a taxi into Glasgow will shorten the travel time; but only very slightly.

Hiring a car: you don't need a car around town in Edinburgh, and some hotels are inconveniently situated for parking. A car will be handy if travelling out of town.

Were I arriving in Glasgow in early evening I'd use public transport - I've done similar in Paris, Rome, Naples etc. [There are places like Malaga where a car is pretty important, but I wouldn't worry about it for Glasgow/Edinburgh]

Get yourselves straight to Edinburgh by bus then train as described above. The journey is not a scenic one. It's probably the least attractive bit of Scotland you'll see on your trip so don't waste time spending the night just to see it at leisure

I did this trip a couple of months ago, you can either get the Airport Shuttle to Queen Street and then the train for £18.50 total. Or get the bus all the way - Glasgow shuttle to Buchanan St Bus Station and then the Citylink 900 bus to Edinburgh. The latter can be purchased as a combination ticket from the driver when you get on the bus at the airport for £12.50 total.

So bus is cheaper, takes slightly longer (but does stop at various places on the way into Edinburgh so may be more convenient depending on where you are staying).

As last post points out, if there are a party of 4 the 500 shuttle into Glasgow has a "4 for 3" group ticket at £18!

At that time of night the journey into Glasgow is only 15 mins.

If you want to swap convenience over saving around 25-30 mins time then swap busses at Buchanan Bus Stn (the 2 stands are adjacent) then the 900 through to Edinburgh, not sure how that goes with the combined through ticket though? Check with the driver at the airport.

Otherwise get off at Queen St Stn for a train to Edinburgh at 47 mins with one every 30 mins at that time of night

There are merits to both versions depending on how much luggage and final destination in Edinburgh, like said a car is useless in Edinburgh!!

A group save ticket for the train will be cheaper than buying tickets individually from Queen St to Edinburgh.

Remember to get the Edinburgh service that goes via Falkirk High.

+1 to post 4

Get the journey over and done with rather than mess up a substantial amount of your first proper day (and a substantial proportion of your time there) moving hotels. Instead next morning wake up already there immediately ready to sightsee.

When you're going city centre to city centre, train every time.

Either the sleeper service to Euston overnight or a daytime service to Kings Cross (about 4.5 hours with some nice views especially for the first part of the journey on the left hand side).
