Countryside within an hours train journey from glasgow

I am visiting Glasgow for the first time in July and also want to take in some countryside or a small town while I am there. Looking for suggestions for somewhere to visit for 2 or 3 days which is preferably accessible by train in about an hour from Glasgow?

Neither of us drive so looking for somewhere with a reasonable amount to do when just getting around by foot or bus.

Thanks

Maybe Rothsay on the Isle of Bute or Brodick on Arran or Balloch on the shores of Loch Lomond. Depends on what you define as "a reasonable amount to do".

Another vote for Arran, which has good bus services covering the whole island.

Are you looking to spend 2-3 nights in one place or are you looking for ideas for 2-3 day trips out of the City?

If the latter then Glasgow has the largest suburban rail network in the UK outside of London.

Within 1 hour and with most routes having frequencies of 30-60 mins at most you can choose from the likes of Ayr, Largs, Helensburgh, Loch Lomond, Stirling and Lanark.

With the exception of Arran which is actually an hours train then an hours Ferry the places we have mentioned wouldn't really merit enough to overnight in hence my suggestion of two seperate day trips utilising the huge rail network that is within 1 hour.

For instance one day you could take in the stunning scenery of Loch Lomond (train to Balloch) and the next day you could take in the Unesco World Heritage Site of New Lanark, thus giving you the more varied options of sampling Glasgow's nightlife and dining options in between.

Just a thought but with such an excellent rail system it certainly gives you greater options than upping sticks with luggage and finding other accomadation.
