Commonwealth Games Hockey

Hi all,

We are looking forward to visiting Glasgow again next week and have tickets for daytime events for which we will be travelling by train from Edinburgh and using the various travel options available. However, we have tickets for Thursday's hockey session which doesn't finish till 11pm. Looking at the travel websites, the best we can hope for is getting back to Edinburgh at 1am! Walking is a problem as one of us has some mobility issues.

How practical will it be to drive to Glasgow and park near Glasgow Green? I'm aware there's parking restrictions around venues but as the hockey is held at a smaller venue than say Hampden Park, should we have to walk far from on-street parking and how safe will the car be?

Thank you for your help, and looking forward to a big Glasgow welcome on Tuesday!

Check the official websites to see what shuttle bus options there are for this venue, most shuttle buses seem to originate from and return to Buchanan Bus Stn which is not far from Queen St Stn for your train to/from Edinburgh.

Although the National Hockey Centre is small and on Glasgow Green the road to it either side on Ballater St and Kings Dr is closed to all traffic so getting near in a car is a no no.

Likewise the Centre is not far from the Athletes Village and the Emirates so whilst roads between the venues are open they have no parking/waiting yellow cones on them.

If you were going to park in a residential area then Bridgeton would be the nearest or the Gorbals area but neither would be a first choice as far as safety of the vehicle goes!

Hi Madscotsman,

Many thanks for the prompt reply. Our other thought was to leave the car in a safer area and hail a taxi to take us as close to the venue as possible. If we are driving in from Edinburgh, where would you suggest we aim for? Also, what's the likelihood of getting a cab from outside the venue at kicking out time?

Cheers, Footman

Unfortunately for me The Taxi option is also fraught, we just can't get near the venues either and are restricted as well.

Last night I was getting flagged down by attendees of the Games up to a mile away from venues after they came out!!!

The problem with your plan is you still need to get to the other side of Glasgow City Centre from the Edinburgh side and there is not a lot of safe'ish residential parking nearby due to the topographic nature with the river, parkland and mostly industrial estates around there.

Tbh the train/shuttle bus is the best option!
