Travel to Hampden during Commonwealth Games

Hi,

Can anyone advise the best way to get to Hampden for the Athletics tomorrow? I saw the long queues outside Central Station yesterday and was wondering if anyone has found alternative ways of getting there from the city centre.

Thanks

Not really! It's either train, bus or Taxi or walk, which is not entirely unrealistic given that Hampden is only approx 3 miles south of the City Centre, so if the prospect of waiting around an hour for the train to get you there and you are reasonably fit then you could walk it in less.

This website might be of use to you;

In the journey planner section just type in Central station or even your starting point and put Hampden as your finish, it will list all possible alternatives including Games Shuttles.

It is possible to drive and park less than ten minutes walk away if you fancy taking the car.

Walk to Buchanan bus station and get the shuttle bus. Getting these is easy. I have found the biggest queues on the way back. But it only took about 1hr including bus trip and queue.

The queues on the way back can be long but there seem to be loads of buses. Obviously if you leave at the very end you will get caught up with plenty of other people.

So far taking the car has beaten public transport.

We have been there twice so far. The number 4 bus which we first got from Scotstounhill, but goes to the New Victoria Hospital via the bus stops outside Glasgow Central, has been our way there. It took about 20 minutes from the hospital to Hampden on foot.

On the way back, the sight of so many people heading for a shuttle bus looks daunting, but we kept walking at a steady pace, never stopped, until we were at the front of the queue and then got a seat on the bus which left. It was easy.

Other guests in our hotel travelled their via Rutherglen station and said it was an easy trip.

We parked outside some flats in Toryglen for one session, and on Menock Road at the back of Kings Park station for another. Non-metered, and a 10-15 minute walk in both cases.

Today we left the Gymnastics at the Hydro at 4.20pm and got the train from Exhibition Centre to Glasgow Central Low Level. From there we joined the queue to get into the High Level which moved very steadily with the MD of Scotrail watching. The train was busy, but not overcrowded. I have been on far worse going in and put of London.

We were through security at Hampden at 5.45pm... Just 85 minutes later.

My tip for Hampden... The nearer you are to you seat, the shorter the queue for the Ladies!

We used the Buchanan Bus Station free shuttle bus - 45 mins from joining the queue to sitting in our seats. 35 mins on the way back.
