5 1/2 on highland: Day trips from Inverness or move around

We are going to visit Scotland in September and plan to spend few days on the highlands. The in/out plan is arrive on Fort William on 9/10 and take Caledonian Sleeper train back to London on 9/15.

Our current plan is stay all four nights in Inverness.

1. Half day around Fort William and journey to Inverness.

2. One day tour the city.

3. One day around Inverness/Loch Ness.

4, Day tour to Skye via Applecross. (Getting excited by reading another post:)

5. Day trip to Dundee via Aviemore.

6. Aberdeen and coast line.

Any suggestion? Is it doable or it's better change places every night?

Thanks

Are there any specific reason's for visiting Dundee and Aberdeen and what type of things are you hoping to do on your trip?

My preference is old castle and pretty view. Couple miles hiking is good too.

I'd forget Aberdeen and Dundee in that case.

Will you be hiring a car? That's the best way to get around and see the most scenic places

To me day 5 and day 6 are strange choices and mean a lot of travelling to see not a lot. Instead you can spend one of the days closer to Inverness by doing Culloden Battlefield, Cawdor Castle and / or Brodie Castle all a bit to the east of Inverness.

Just a quick first thoughts (well apart from dropping Dundee and Aberdeen ;-) ) you could easily spend more then half a day in the Fort William area (including Glencoe/Glenfinnan/Glen Nevis/Nevis Range so perhaps an overnight around there. I would also be tempted to add an overnight on Skye.

If you want to take a trip north of Inverness then two hours on the train take you to Golspie and a mile north of the town is Dunrobin Castle

Hi. I agree with Goanjock. Why not spend a night on Skye? The Applecross drive is fantastic, great idea! But it's a looonnnnggggg day trip to attempt Skye from Inverness.

Inverness does make a good hub base, but I think your proposed spokes are too long to make good day trips. Definitely skip Dundee and Aberdeen.

And enjoy the Caledonian sleeper, great adventure!

I'm assuming you will pick up a hire car in Fort William and return it there? If so, and bearing in mind that you are now thinking of leaving out Dundee and Aberdeen (a good move, IMO), then I suggest you stay three nights in Fort WiIliam, and then two nights on Skye.

While you are in Fort William it's an easy day trip to Inverness and Culloden, taking in Loch Ness en route.

On Sat 13 Sept I suggest you drive to Skye via the ferry from Mallaig. On Monday 15 leave Skye by the bridge, and detour via Applecross if you like, arriving Fort William in time to drop car off and catch train.
