What are the Scottish sights one should not miss ?

We will be staying in Edinburgh and have eight days. My husband wants to see Iona. My daughter (adult) and I have a very open agenda for this October trip. Dad has a heart problem. We have reserved a car and are willing to spend a night out from home base. Train trip or channel ride recommended?

Hi. I'm not sure I understand the logistics of your trip. Edinburgh for 8 days? And then elsewhere in Scotland, or 8 days total? Iona as a home base? Or Edinburgh as a home base with an overnight to visit Iona? Or a different home base entirely? A channel trip? To mainland Europe?

Also, you mention a heart condition - how goes this affect him? No long hikes, or wheelchair bound? Does he need to be close to a hospital at all times?

Sorry to answer your questions with more questions, but you will find that the more details you can give us, the more tailored information you will receive :)

What interests your family? Hiking, wildlife, photography, castles, golf, whisky, cuisine, watersports, cities, lochs, galleries.... Shopping?

Abs :)

Also please give your dates. This can make a huge difference to what you can do as some attractions close October to Easter and daylight hours vary according to time of year

The sights not to miss are the ones YOU want to see, not someone else.

Doyou have accommodation booked in Edinburgh for a week? (post a bit vague), you could hire a car and make a two/three day trip out to Iona, depending on the time of year you would need to book the ferry in advance.

No idea what 'train trip or channel ride' means ;-)

As the others have said, the more info you can provide the better reposnses you'll get.

But in Edinburgh, the things to see include Edinburgh Castle, Museums, Theatre Shows, Arthurs Seat etc etc.

If you venture out of Edinburgh in the car, there is an endless list of places you could go but if you head North a few minutes later you'll cross the Forth Road Bridge and have views of the Forth (railway) Bridge as you cross into Fife. At the other side you have Deep Sea World.

To get to Iona from Edinburgh, you'd spend most of the day getting up to Oban. From there (probably the following day) you can catch the CalMac Ferry to Mull (Craignure) where you'd either drive or go by bus to the smaller ferry to Iona. This drive from memory can take a couple of hours depending on where you stop off at along the way. The roads across to Fionnphort for the ferry to Iona is mostly on single track roads with passing places so leaving the car at Oban and going by ferry and bus is the more relaxing option. The trip from Oban to Mull to Iona and back is a full day trip in itself.

Other places to consider visiting from Edinburgh include Stirling, Perth, Glasgow, Inverness but there are so many other options too. 8 days won't allow you to see anything but a fraction of them though.

Edinburgh is very hilly - do you think Mr. B will be affected by this when sightseeing? A trip on an open top bus is a great way to see the city without too much walking and you can hop on and off at will wherever you like to see the various attractions. You will NOT need a car in Edinburgh - in fact its a nuisance unless the place you are staying has free parking. Public transport is very good and taxis are not too expensive either.

As others have said - more info please in order for us to give you the best advice

Are you planning on staying in Inverness as well as Edinburgh?? They are a good long distance away from each other on some 'testing' roads....

The drive from Edinburgh to Inverness will take 2.5 to 3 hours, via the A90, M90 and A9. The road is good mostly at 60 or 70 mph speed limits. If there are any issues with it, it's the odd idiot with no patience but if you sit at a steady speed and let them go on their merry way the journey will be fine.

8 days in Scotland and have lodging in Edinburgh but not glued to the site. Heart condition means a little trouble walking. No hiking! This family just enjoys the sights and sounds and the uniquness of the country.

Where we stay is of little importance. If the sight is great, we will get there.
