inverness to Armadale on Skye

Is it possible to drive from Inverness to Armadale and back with a stop at Eilean Donan and the MacDonald visitor center returning to Inverness before dark? If not what's a good place to spend the night on or near Skye?

Ive stayed in the Balmacara guest house prior to catching the a.m. ferry from Uig. It was very nice and the views in the morning are wonderful.

It will take about 3 hours to do the drive so it is perfectly possible.

If you are doing this in the winter be prepared to be driving in the dark, really depends what time of year you intend to make the trip.

My dates are August 16-27, 2015 so during that time of year will I be able to return to Inverness before dark? Also, you said the drive was 3 hours so is that round trip or each way?

You can check drive times on various sites, eg, viamichelin.com, which also shows scenic routes. And you can easily check daylight hours at timeanddate.com. However, there should be plenty of gloaming then, so actual sunset might not be crucial.

If you are touring around, you'll find those type of sites helpful.

August is the middle of summer so it wont get that dark at all. Inverness to Armadale, excluding any stops driving as a tourist will be almost 3 hours each way. its 100 miles assuming you go down Loch Ness and across the Skye Bridge.

Its a long way down for a short time on Skye, if you have the time I would stay a night on Skye, either down on the Sleat peninsula where you will be going for Clan Donald, or maybe up to Portree and back to Inverness the following day.

Sleat is a lovely part of Skye, often an area people rush through and would make a great stop.I wouldn't fancy doing the drive you propose as a round trip - the roads are quite winding and can be tiring. You might dread the journey back, no matter how scenic most of it is.There is so much to see and do in the area - and a little beyond, wonderful Torridon for example - seems a shame to only have so little time in it.
