Mallaig or stop off earlier?

We are travelling up to Mallaig for the night because we want to do the most scenic railway journey in the world

There only seem to be 2 hotels in Mallaig and no good pubs (unless someone can advise me differently)

is it worth jumping off the train a few stops before Mallaig for the night or even going back to Fort William to have a good meal and hotel?

any advise welcome

thanks

...or you could catch the ferry from Mallaig over to Skye and spend the night there. It's only half an hour across. Timetables at www.calmac.co.uk

It depends how pushed you are for time.

If you have time an even better option would be to take the ferry from Mallaig to Knoydart (which you can only reach by sea) and stay in the Pier House Hotel at Inverie or at the Old Forge pub - which claims to be the remotest pub in the west of scotland.

www.theoldforge.co.uk and www.thepierhouseknoydart.co.uk give the info - I stayed at the pierhouse and found it very comfortable (homely rather than posh) and the food was good.

What time are you due to arrive? And what sort of

experience are you hoping for? Mallaig isn't the most exciting place, I'm afraid. Morar and Arisaig are gorgeous but it would be a more 'back to basics' experience. If it's a 'posh' hotel and extravagent meal type of night, you could do worse than the Glenfinnan House Hotel or Prince's House Hotel in Glenfinnan. If time allows, take the train to Mallaig, then return to Glenfinnan for the night.

Yes, there could very well be live music at the Clachain - hope you don't want an early night!
