greenock to saltcoats?

our cruise ship will be stopping for one day in greenock. My husbands grandparents were born in Saltcoats. We thought we would like to see the town. We have an actual address of the home one of them was born. Would like to see more of the Glasgow area as well. Any suggestions. Not really wanting to rent a car. Afraid we will drive on the wrong side of the road.. LOL

The shortest route would be around the Clyde coast, but there is a gap in the rail lines, which might mean getting a bus.

Alternatively, head For Paisley on the train and change there for the Largs train. Saltcoats is about 40 minutes from Paisley. Return to Glasgow Central station .

But you dont really have a lot of time for exploring. Say 2 hours to Saltcoats....

You can take a Stagecoach bus from Greenock to Saltcoats.

There are trains from there to Glasgow and from Glasgow to Greenock.

Hi. Just to reiterate and add to the previous comments;

The bus takes about 1hr 20 minutes from Greenock so factor that into your day, although the bus is about a 7-10minute walk from where the boat docks.

You could take the train as well from Greenock Central to Saltcoats getting off at Paisley Gilmour Street. I was away at the weekend and used this particular method to get to a nearby station and takes about the same time as the bus albeit you are changing trains.

Doing Greenock-Saltcoats-Glasgow-Greenock would be very difficult to do in 1 day especially if your boat is leving at 6.30ish and even if you did hire a car you would struggle.

Saltcoats is a small costal town and whilst there are some nice walks, there isnt much else after that, though if anyone is reading from North Ayshire you might disagree.

Enjoy the trip whatever choice you make!

Hi!

I would definitely advise getting the bus from Greenock to largs (which takes 35 minutes) and catching the train to saltcoats from largs (15 minutes).

You can get the 585, 901,906, 576 from Greenock, they all go to largs, get off in largs when you see the royal bank of Scotland, cross the road and walk 1 minute up the street and you're at the train station. Only 4 stops on the train, try and buy your ticket at the station before getting on the train as they often charge you more if you try to buy it on the train. Trains from largs leave at 53 minutes past the hour for most of the day (different times before 9am and at 5.30). There is only one train so don't worry about getting on the wrong one!

When returning from saltcoats, be careful not to get on the train to ardrossan harbour as it leaves from the same platform.

Also, if you have the whole day and can't go too far, you could spend some time in largs too!

Hope you enjoy scotland!

Thank you everyone for your advise. It was raining when the ship docked. We decided to hire a taxi for the day. Just seemed a bit scary to do what we wanted to do and not to have to worry about time. We did stop in Lars, bought a wool sweater made in Scotland. We did go to Saltcoats, Our taxi driver had to ask another taxi driver how to get to the address we had. For some reason there was not street name on the corners. If we walked from the train, might not have been able to find the homes. We drove to the church where his grandparents were married. Could not go inside it was closed. Walked around the town that his family shopped in. My husband was happy to be there. Then the taxi took us over to Glasgow, Really did not get to see too much of the city. A beautiful drive along the coast. We felt it was a productive day.
