Map for driving

I am planning a trip to Orkney next month and have hired a car. Is there a good road map I can get online in advance? I'm not getting the impression that the Kirkwall airport (which is where we are arriving) is likely to have huge numbers of shops. Thanks.

To qoute the website:

Airfayre Cafe - offering :-

Hot and cold drinks, coffees, teas, hot chocolate and a licensed bar

Snacks and light meals including a daily special using ingredients sourced from local suppliers

Shop - including daily and weekly newspapers, gifts and last minute toiletries and supplies

Not high profile. So you might be lucky, you might not. Kirkwall (town) shouldn't be a problem though.

I have a cunning plan:

Use the walkhighlands site. Pick a route on Orkney, any route. For example:

walkhighlands.co.uk/orkney/inganess-wideford…

Click through onto their map.

Ingore the waymarked route. Zoom out and in and scroll around. You can use your print screen button and a graphics package to lace together maps for the areas you want. Or print them and use glue.

Certainly good enough for advance planning or to get you out of the airport.

What you need is an good local map & you can buy these in any newsagents in Kirkwall.

There is only one road leaving the airport - head towards the town (Kirkwall) and buy a map.

Or contact our tourist information service Visit Orkney and buy one from them before you travel.

When you arrive pick up a copy of the Orkney Visitor Guide and The Islands Of Orkney magazines. They have maps as well as loads of info and are free. You will find copies at the airport as well as at the receptions of most hotels www.visitorkney.com

p.s. you can also order the brochure via the website

You can't beat the Ordnance Survey 1:50K series. You need sheets 5, 6 and 7.
