where to stay?

We are thinking of visiting in May or June and staying self - catering somewhere for a week but I am unsure of where we would be best to base ourselves and was wondering if anyone had any tips? We enjoy walking and wildlife watching but we don't want to be completely in the middle of nowhere - we enjoy going out for a meal or a drink and it would be nice to stay somewhere within walking distance of somewhere to eat/drink. Also although we don't want to dash around everywhere we would like to be somewhere relatively central for exploring different islands etc.

Any tips gratefully received

Thanks

Self-catering has really taken off in Shetland over the last few years and there are some very high quality places to stay. Go to www.shetland.org and follow links to get some ideas. The challenge in your case is finding somewhere within walking distance of a place to eat. There aren’t many pubs/restaurants in Shetland, and they do tend to be scattered, unless of course your in Lerwick, Scalloway or possibly Brae. You say you want to be central so you can explore other islands, in which case you are probably best staying on Mainland. If being in walking distance of places to eat is a priority, then you do need to look at accommodation in Lerwick – though if you are coming to Shetland primarily for the wildlife, I think it’s a bit of a shame to stay in the town. I have a couple of suggestions for you in the south Mainland – one is Spiggie House www.spiggiehouse.co.uk – a nice apartment adjoining the house, on a croft and close to Scousburgh beach – and not a long walk to the Spiggie Hotel. And the second suggestion is the Spiggie Hotel, because this is now the Spiggie Hotel and Lodges. www.spiggiehotel.co.uk - and you’ll find reviews here on Tripadvisor. Spiggie Hotel has a small, friendly bar and a little restaurant which features local produce. If you stayed here, you would have just metres to walk for a meal…. And your close to some fabulous wildlife sites – Sumburgh Head, Loch of Spiggie, Mousa to name but three. OK, both the Spiggie suggestions are in the south mainland, but its only about 25 minutes drive to Lerwick, and then you can easily strike off to the west mainland, north mainland or head up to Toft for the ferries to Yell, Unst and Fetlar. Hope this helps.

We based ourselves at Brekka Lodge for our visits to Shetland. Brilliant place, especially the stoney beach below the property. It is central, ideal base to explore or just relax. Check out their website for availability. http://www.selfcateringshetland.co.uk/
