N. Ireland or Donegal to Islay

Traveling in the next week or two from Ireland.

Does anybody know if there are water taxis between Ballycastle or Rathlin Island and Islay?

I really only want to see Finlaggan.

So close to Donegal, yet so far...

Try http://www.islayseasafari.co.uk/ and/or http://www.gighaseatours.co.uk/

But they won't be cheap!

That first one is £250 per hour and I'm guessing it will take an hour each way at least plus waiting time.

Thanks, Dhmellor and Ronaldo.

I emailed the SeaSafari crowd a day or two ago with no response.

The bus-bus-ferry-bus to Glasgow just takes too long and would involve an overnight in Glasgow. Till I add it all up, I may as well fly over. (pricey, last time I checked)

There's a charter from Ballycastle to Campbelltown for about 55 sterling p.p., I think. Maybe that's my best option?

What is it you are trying to do? Is it only for one day?

Getting to Campbeltown is still nowhere near Islay. You can fly from Glasgow.

Hi Peterscot.

I'm looking to get 2 days on Islay. Finlaggan is really what I'm coming to see. I'm in Ireland now, so flying from Glasgow would mean getting *to* Glasgow, and that involves a taxi-bus-bus-ferry-bus and an extra day's travel. Plus, the airfare is 387.12 sterling. I can't afford it.

The charter would probably be a good option if the weather cooperated. Looks like I could get the charter from Ballycastle to Campbeltown and then the bus from Campbeltown to the ferry terminal & head over to Islay. Times link up okay, I think. If one link gets botched up, though, the rest of the plans would go belly-up.

So, if you are short of time, why not fly *to* Glasgow.

There's Aer Lingus, or Loganair have flights from Donegal for less than 50 euro, and flights from GLA to Islay for about the same.

Not sure where you get 387.12

Wow, you're finding way better rates than I am. Are you on the flybe site?

I checked for GLA to Islay and came up with 387.12 for the two of us.

Another option is bus-ferry-bus-ferry.

Get a bus to Ballycastle, Kintyre Express to Campbeltown (http://www.kintyreexpress.com/), bus to Kennacraig (http://www.citylink.co.uk/) and the ferry to Islay (http://www.calmac.co.uk/)

If you catch the early departure from Ballycastle you'll be in Campbeltown at 11am, bus leaves at 11:30am and deposit you at Kennacraig in good time for the 1pm ferry, arriving on Islay approx 2 hours later.

I was looking at the Aer Lingus and Loganair sites, as indicated, and using random dates in July.

I had no idea there were 2 of you, or where you were starting from, except "Ireland"....
