Trip Planning

Can anyone help plan a trip that includes Lewis and Colonsay? We're coming from New Zealand so local knowledge would be a help. We'll be using public transport but if practical to hire a car here and there we don't mind doing that. Don't want long drives though.

Isle of Lewis, do you want to see the Callanish Standing Stone?

As if your time is limited, you can visit Skye (so, so pretty isle), and there is a ferry/bus tour that leave Uig to go on Lewis and stop at the Standing Stones.Grand Tour of Lewis

See the sights of Lewis in one day including the ancient Callanish Standing Stones, Dun Carloway Broch and Gearrannan Blackhouse Village+. Inclusive cruise, breakfast roll and coach ticket.

+A small admission fee will be charged. calmac.co.uk/destinations/day-trips-by-ferry…

And indeed, renting a car would help you a lot!

Colonsay and Lewis are both fabulous, but as the others suggest, not so close together. I'm assuming you've got good reasons to visit these two places, so I'm not going to direct you to other islands!

The first things to say is a car is virtually essential. Both to travel to your destinations, then to visit places when you're there. I shudder to think about trying to do this by bus and train.

The first thing you need to study is the CalMac timetable for the appropriate season. Summer 2013 timetables are out now. http://www.calmac.co.uk/timetables That will give you:

* Frequencies - there are only four or five sailings a week to Colonsay.

* Route options - there are different ways to reach Lewis, and you can go one way and return another.

* Journey times - sailings are pretty leisurely, so you'll need to factor that into your plans.

But congratulations on opting for such islands in your holiday - I believe a holiday to Scotland is not complete without an island odyssey!
