train to skye

Is it possible to take a train from Edinburgh to the isle of Skye? If so, how much would it cost and how long would it take. Would it be more reasonable to go to Inverness for a couple of days from Edinbugh instead?

You can take a train to Mallaig then a ferry to Skye or you can take a train to the Kyle of Lochalsh then bus from there

It depends what you are looking for - if its the hustle and bustle of a lively highland town then Inverness is for you. Its also very central for visiting in any direction and there are many tours of the Highlands which start and end here. You can go from Edinburgh to Inverness in the train and it takes about 3.5 hours with a few stops at interesting towns like Dunkeld, Pitlochry, Blair Atholl and Aviemore if you DID want to hop off and explore. (Just make sure there is another train coming that you can hop back onto!)

Skye on the other hand has beautiful scenery, mountains, wide open spaces, wildlife, walking etc. Which would you prefer?

I've done this trip a few times. Edinburgh to inverness, change trains, Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh. Kyle used to be the ferry terminal for Skye, until the nearby bridge was built. There are buses from here to several destinations on Skye, Portree being the main one. It is possible to do Inverness - Portree and back in a day, but it will be mostly travelling - albeit through some of the most spectacular scenery in the UK. Staying in Inverness would be a good base for other trips as well.

We are hoping to get to Mallaig by train from Glasgow on Aug. 14, then taking a ferry and spending a few days in Skye. How soon in advance should we try to book the ferry? We are also thinking of renting a car either in Mallaig or somewhere near the ferry port on Skye - question: are cars allowed on the ferry? Are there car rentals on Skye?

Pattybronx, you don't need to book the ferry in advance if you are just foot passengers (i.e. not taking a car on the ferry). You just turn up, buy a ticket, and go.

No point in trying to hire a car in Mallaig and then paying to take it on the ferry. There are a few car hire firms on Skye, and at least one of those will deliver to Armadale, where the ferry from Mallaig arrives. Try (+44)1471-820151.

You have the choice of two of the most scenic rail journies in UK. Either via Glasgow and the West Highland line (made famous in Harry Potter Movie) to Mallaig then by ferry to Skye or via Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh then by bus over the bridge to Skye.

Costs depend on when you book. In advance £28 single, book on the day £68 single. If you are planning several journeys by train in Scotland it is worth looking at Highland Rover Ticket.

This helps. I too am planning to take a trip to skye and thought we would hire a car but now feel we are better off hiring in Skye as you say.

Is there a train or bus from Glencoe to Skye. We dont want to miss out on the scenery but wanna watch our wallet too. Would there be car hire companies in Portree?

Citylink buses go via Glencoe to Skye. See www.citylink.co.uk. And there is car hire at Portree and elsewhere on Skye.
