My wife & I will visiting Skye in June from South Africa. Is it possible to fly direct from Skye to London or does one have to go via Inverness?

There are no scheduled flights to the airstrip on Skye. You can fly to Inverness and travel to Skye by train (to Kyle of Lochalsh at the mainland end of the Skye Bridge) or direct by bus. Alternatively you can fly to Glasgow and on to Skye via the West Highland railway (to Mallaig from where there is a ferry to Armadale on Skye) or again by bus. Going from Glasgow will take longer.

Good advice from no 1. In addition, there is a direct Citylink coach every day from Skye to Glasgow Airport. It leaves Portree at 07.45 and arrives at GLA at 13.42.

The road trips to Skye are beautiful so I would recommend;

Fly to Glasgow and hire a car

Leave the aiport on the motorway headed for Greenock (ie away from Glasgow)

Soon cross the Clyde on the Erskine Bridge and pick up the A82 for Dumbarton, Loch Lomond, Crianlarich, Glencoe Ballachulish and Fort William

At Fort William head west to Mallaig where cross by ferry to Skye (CALMAC website for ferry details)

Spend time on SKye

Then return to mainland via bridge to Kyle of Lochalsh

head east as far as Eileen Donan castle

then retrace steps slightly and head for Loch CArron

drive around the Loch and head for Torridon

but soon leave the road to take the pass-of-the-cattle (highest road in UK) to Applecross

from Applecross hug coastline to Shieldaig, drive thru the village then on to Torridon

After Torridon via Kinlochewe and Achnasheen t oINverness and fly south

have a great trip

Thanks for the useful input.

We would prefer to travel Inverness/Portree and return by bus/coach.

Do you have details of the fares involved?
