Southwest Ireland city by direct train from Dublin?

We want to take the train from Dublin direct to a city in the west-southwest part of Ireland to rent a car for a few days and drive around the area. We want to see the Cliffs of Moher, Ring of Kerry, etc. that we've read about - ending in Cork where we can fly to London for the next part of our trip.

What city that is reachable by train direct from Dublin would you suggest to start in?

Any suggestions on what to see that might be interesting but doesn't generally make the travel books would also be welcome.

You could take the train to Galway and hire a car here and drive down via the cliffs, the Burren and on to Kerry and west Cork ending up in Cork City. Not sure where you can rent a car in Galyway though but if you cant get one there you could get the train to Limerick and rent a car at Shannon airport and go to the cliffs from there.

Most car hire companies have city depots, so you usually don't need to go to the airports.

First of all, look at the various quotes and pick your car hire company, then let us know. We can then tell you what is the best route to take. Usually you can take a taxi from the station to the city depot.

Limerick is a good idea as it is mid-way between West Clare and Kerry. Listowel in North(ish) Kerry is another suggestion as you could bypass Limerick when going from Kerry to West Clare by using the Ferry (www.shannonferries.com). But if you plan to take the train, then come to Limerick first and then drive to Listowel.

Listowel is a nice town, the Listowel Arms is a good hotel. Listowel was home to one of Ireland's most famous writers, the great John B. Keane.
