Tour Company Reputations

Hi, we're still trying to select between 2 different tour companies. Has anyone used either of these companies and would you please give us your opinions.

Bren - I used CIE for a May 2005 Irish Explorer tour. I would highly recommend CIE. They run a very orgainzed tour, but are incredibly informative, funny, professional and sometimes spontaneous at the same time.

Our coach was a FULL coach, only one empty seat. Ages ranged from 18 to 87 (she celebrated her 88th birthday on the tour, our night at the castle, the CIE guide arranged a cake w/candles and the entire staff and tour group sang to her).

We never had a mix up with any of our bags, rooms, timing issues, etc. The only time we touched our luggage was to collect it at the airport, after that it was delivered right to our hotel room and collected from our room on travel days.

One thing I'm glad we did was choose a tour that stayed in all locations 2 nights, instead of just 1. It was nice to not have to pack and re-pack every single night/morning. I think that made a big difference.

I think everyone on our tour felt as though the tour was catered to them, the guide was always great about answering questions, pointing out interesting facts, funny stories.

My mother went on the tour with me, she had previously gone on a Brendan tour, which she enjoyed very much also, but she did comment on a few differences, CIE had better food choices, run a tighter ship, so to speak, as far as organization, communication with hotels, drivers throwing in a little extra effort, etc.

Ok, there you have it, recommendation #1. I will warn you, be ready for fellow TA forum contributors who will try to discourage you from a tour and encouraging to you drive yourself. I know I wouldn't have learned nearly as much as I did about the history of the country if we drove ourselves. HOWEVER, because of the tour, I fell in love with the country and am now planning a return trip to explore areas on my own.

Good luck with your decision, either way you'll have a fantastic time!

Thank you for your response and I definitely agree with everything you have said regarding tours. I'm traveling with a group of 7 - 11 between ages 50 and late 70's. It will be much easier to not have to deal with luggage. Only 2 men will be along and one of them being my husband and I can just see the two of them transporting all the luggage for everyone. Maybe one day we'll want to go back on our own too. With a group the size of ours, I'd like to see the structure and have it be someone elses' fault that we have to be here at this time. :) We've taken a couple of tours in the past to other locations and they have been great.

I read several reviews on eopinions regarding CIE, but there was only 1 review for Brian Moore. It was excellent all the way, but I have no clue who wrote it. Could have been Brian Moore. HA HA HA

Enjoy your next trip to Ireland!

Hi Bren,

Back in March of this year, I was on a tour with CIE and loved it. Everything was organized and planned very well. There was not trouble getting from the airport to the coach or any problems at the hotels.

There were 23 of us and we had a blast. Our driver Declan was the best. He made sure we were all accounted for, bent over backwards to make sure we were happy at the hotels, the sites we stopped and he was a walking encyclopedia. I learned more from him about Ireland than I did in my Irish history class. He was great. I miss him to this day.

Most every entrance fee was covered for events, sites and shows. Very profession and very much worth it. I will no doubt use CIE again in the future.

Hope that helps!

i posted somewhere, not sure where....my friends did a brian moore tour and they loved it...and i have done a cie tour and had a good time....

too much behind time for me....lots of miles, but some beautiful scenery....and my friends said the same thing...their tour group was well organized, the driver a hoot, and very versed in the history of ireland....

so pick one, you can't go wrong with either i think....but i am betting money that you will opt to return with a car and really "see" some of the wonderful sites you will miss or only see snippets of....

so have a wonderful time and leave the driving to them.....lol...
