Ireland 11-day itinerary

OK, I've seen how this works. Someone posts an itinerary and a lot of great folks comment on it. I'm looking for the same here.

Now, a quick disclaimer, I know my first two days are packed and with long drives. To satisfy my better half, it's got to be this way. So, I realize many of you may say it's not doable or crazy to attempt.

Day 1-From Dublin Airport up the A2 to Giant's Causeway and Bushmills.

Day 2-See what we didn't see the day before and drive from Bushmills to Galway stopping at a few towns along the way. Late arrival acknowledged.

Day 3-See the Connemara. Back to Galway for some dinner and Pub action in Galway.

Day 4-The Burren, Cliffs and Falls in Ennistymon before dinner and night in Ennis.

Day 5-Castle Day as we visit Bunratty and King John's. A trip to Lough Gur before finishing up at Adare Manor. (Just a visit, not a stay). Overnight in Adare.

Day 6-Leisurely drive to Killarney National Park before dinner and Pub activity in Kenmare.

Day 7-Dingle Peninsula. Late lunch in Dingle then back to Kenmare.

Day 8-Ring of ???. Perhaps Kerry. Perhaps Berea. I'll leave it to the feedback I get. Back in Kenmare in for Pub Grub and some pints.

Day 9-If we did the ROK on Day 8, may do the Ring of Berea today. But the Bantry House is on the list no matter what. Then the drive to Kinsale taking the "long way." Dinner and night in Kinsale.

Day 10-Cahir Castle and Rock of Cashel. Up to Kilkenny for the night.

Day 11-Kilkenny Castle and off to Dublin to catch a plane in the AM.

Let me know what you think. If there is anything I could fit in. Or something I need to take out. Always up for some "instead of's" as well.

Thanks,

Tremaine

Tremaine, I think you'll need a holiday after your return from Ireland. Phew!

These are just some comments on some of your days, not all of them.

Days 1 to 3 are far too busy and exhausting but you said yourself that this can't be changed. I'm not saying it can't be done but it is crazy alright. Connemara cannot be seen in one day, you'll just get a glimpse.

Day 7. I hope you realise that the drive to Dingle from Kenmare is much, much longer than you think. You're not going to do the Dingle peninsula any justice at all.

Day 11. You say "Kilkenny Castle and off to Dublin to catch a plane in the AM". How is this going to work? When is your flight? Have you heard about security at the airport that you have to go through? I can't imagine Kilkenny Castle opening before 9am, if your flight is in the AM how are you going to do all this? If you want to see Kilkenny Castle just from the outside and then get to Dublin airport you will still need to get up at 4 am...

I full-heartedly agree with the "pub action", "pub activity" and "some pints", though...

2. Re: Ireland 11-day itinerary

Clauds, thanks for the reply.

A coupld of clarifications. Yeah, I know about the first couple days.

Connemara needs to be a two-dayer? Early start and late night not enough?

How long is the drive to/from Dingle? I figured 3.5-4 hours drive time. Am I way off base there? If that's about right, am I not leaving enough time otherwise? And is the time on the road or in Dingle Town?

And, we're spending that night in Dublin. Catching a plane the NEXT AM. I didn't make that clear.

Thanks so much for the feedback.

Tremaine

3. Re: Ireland 11-day itinerary

Hi,

A couple of points having tried to do something similarly crazy on my trip to Ireland last year - what some forummers on here dubbed the 'testosterone tour'.

*Why don't you fly into Belfast, thereby saving yourself a solid 2-3 hours drive on that first day (Belfast City airport is a lovely little airport). If you fly in to Belfast very early in the morning, you can do the antrim coast in a single day (I did, and was able to see everything I wanted to - giant's causeway, rope bridge, stop for tons of photos etc.) - the drive up along the coast is about 3 hours plus stops, very doable IMHO. Biggest problem is if it rains - no second chances.

*Night 2 and 3 why don't you stay somewhere like Clifden in the Connemara rather than Galway, saving yourself an hour's drive day 2 and putting yourself right on the doorstep of the Connemara

*Night 6 you might want to consider staying in Killarney giving yourself more time to see the National Park that day and saving yourself an hour on the drive to Dingle the next day.

*What I would do instead though would be to stay nights 6 and 7 in Dingle and stay night 8 in Kenmare. That would give you 1 1/2 - 2 days on the Dingle Peninula - enough for a taste - and 1 1/2 days in Killarney/Kenmare/ROK/Berea Peninsula area. ROK is a long day from what I've read (5-6 hours driving PLUS stops, and there will no doubt be many), so you might be better off with your limited time doing the Dingle Peninsula + Berea Peninsula. Both less touristy and crowded than ROK from what I've read and much shorter yet still beautiful (I enjoyed the Dingle Peninsula anyway). You could spend day 8 around Killarney, Killarney National Park and the Gap of Dunloe and then most of day 9 doing Berea Peninsula before carrying on to Kinsale for dinner (as its sort of on the way from Kenmare to Kinsale).

Just my 2 cents worth, the experts here could probably give better advice.

Tremaine

Have you seen this web-site; it's very useful for gauging distance and drive-time. BUT - the drive-times are the MINIMUM it will take to complete a journey. For example, Dublin airport to Giant's Causeway is almost 266km and will take minimum 3hrs, 21minutes. It's probably much closer to 4hrs. Are you Sure you want to drive that distance after a transatlantic flight?

And Bushmills to Galway is at the very least 5hrs 14 mins, according to the web-site, so again, probably closer to 6hrs of driving:

http://www.theaa.com/route-planner/index.jsp

Are you visiting this summer? If so, at least you'll have day-light until 10pm or so.

Day 4 - Burren. I find this area absolutely fascinating! Here are some of my favourite places:

http://www.burrenperfumery.com/

http://www.burrenpage.com/Corcomroe.html

www.stonepages.com/ireland/poulnabrone.html

And here are some recent photos; I returned from my latest visit to Ireland just last week:

Day 6

To save you some driving back and forth, I think you'd be best to drive from Adare to Dingle (min 2hr drive), and explore the Peninsula that day and spend a night on the Peninsula:

tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowUserReviews-g186610-d5…

tripadvisor.co.uk/GoListDetail-i19068-Best_o…

Day 7

Drive from Dingle to Killarney National Park, then on to Kenmare for the night, and some pub action!

Day 8

Recommend Beara Peninsula. Much quieter than the Ring of Kerry, and some wonderful scenery:

http://www.bearatourism.com/visitorinfo.html

I suggested in another post that a picnic on the Peninsula, if it's a nice day, would be marvellous. You'll find yummy things in "Jam" on Henry Street in Kenmare.

Then back to Kenmare for the night.

Day 9

Drive over the Caha Pass to Bantry and visit Bantry House, then take that lovely drive via Skibbereen along the south coast to Kinsale.

It's a very busy non-stop itinerary, but you will get to see some fabulous places along the way. Just be sure to pack plenty of film/memory cards for your camera; you're going to need them!

:-)

I plan to stay in Dublin three nights to do an escorted train tour to Giant's Causeway. We are also doing a tour from Dublin of Newgrange. Saves us from having to do all the driving. Just a thought..

Well, Tremaine, you got some very sound advice from matt_from_Sydney and SarniaGirl. Have a look at their suggestions and try to re-think your itinerary.

And I'm so glad that after Kilkenny you're staying overnight in Dublin before your flight home in the AM. I was getting worried about that!

7. Re: Ireland 11-day itinerary

Thanks for the advice everyone.

Matt, I do think we'll make the Dingle two days and Sarnia, I do like the idea of going directly from Adare to Dingle.

And based on all the advice on these forums, I'll probably do Berea instead of the ROK.

And Sarnia, No, I don't want to make those long drives on two consecutive days. But I've got to keep the peace, you know. And if I break those days up into three, then I know I'm going to have to cut out some things I'd rather see.

I'm going to have to do that anyway, it appears, but I don't want to lose another day.

I will get longer daylight so that will make the itinerary at least seem a little less hectic.

Again, thanks all.

Tremaine, just in case you can take two days for Connemara consider staying overnight in Roundstone (www.roundstone.ie/index.php). It really is a beautiful place. Otherwise Westport.

DON'T PUT ANYTHING ELSE INTO YOUR ITINERARY AND SERIOUSLY THINK ABOUT TAKING SOMETHINGS OUT.

Driving times are only an estimate and don't allow for time to stop and enjoy the scenery, go and look at something or even have lunch. You need to factor these into the overall time.

I take your point about not wanting to cut anything out but I do think you should look again at those first 2 days.

• Are you arriving in Dublin off a transatlantic flight? If so have you thought about jet lag?

• What time is the flight due to arrive in Dublin?

Allowing for picking up bags, clearing customs, immigration, picking up car etc what time do you realistically expect to leave Dublin?

• Are you used to driving on the 'wrong' side of the road?

• Have you considered the tiredness factor after a long flight?

• How much time are you allowing for the journey and will this give you time to stop and look at things - there's a lot of good scenery between Dublin and Giant's Causeway....

Day 2 says "See what we didn't see the day before" that suggests you are already aware of the problem and will already have problems with the schedule AND Day 2 is a hefty one too...

Any chance of splitting these into 3 days and taking out a day elsewhere - although I appreciate this could mean a fair bit of regigging your itinerary? (Think there may be scope for this around Day 4 & 5 or by taking out day 9). Alternatively any chance of flying from Dublin to Belfast to cut down on this bit of the drive?
