What's your favorite small town not too far from Dublin?

I'd love to hear your suggestions for where to go for two nights that's within 2-3 hours from Dublin. We're looking for a small town rather than big city -- but one that also has the usual tourist-friendly amenities such as a picturesque setting, moderately priced lodging, and good cafe choices.

Thank you!

We really enjoy Trim. Close to Newgrange and the Hill of Tara. Trim castle is interesting and the town has many pubs. Not very far.

I guess that "not too far" in US terms is maybe different from "not too far" in Irish terms. Given that distances between towns and cities in Ireland are maybe shorter than in the US, a 3 hour journey will cover a significant part of the country.

Trim, as suggested by Macononthemove is a pleasnt location, about 1 hour's drive from Dublin. Other options include:

Kilkenny (1.5 hours) - great medieval town, with lots to do and see.

Galway (2.5-3 hours) - Burstling location on the west coast - lots of history.

Sligo (3 hours) - A bit smaller and quieter that Kilkenny and Galway but a lovely setting.

I'm suggesting these locations, as they are readily accessible by both car and rail, are large enough to offer a choice of accommodation and places to eat, and yet are small enough to offer a change of scale by comparison with Dublin.

Skerries (Co Dublin) is a lovely seaside town and gives you quick access to plenty of sightseeing around the Co Meath area (Newgrange/Slane/Battle of the Boyne). Or Co Louth (Old Mellifont Abbey/Carlingford Castle/Monasterboice)

Ardgillan Castle is located in Skerries.

Another vote for Sligo. It's an easy 2.5 - 3 hour drive, roads mainly good. When you get there Sligo has so much to offer, beautiful coastline, beaches, surfing, lakes, Glencar Waterfall, museums, golf, megalitic tombs, mountains, to name but a few!

I would recommend the lake region in North Tipperary. It is the region around Lough Derg. Maybe a good place to base yourself is Garrykennedy although this is a small village but it is in a spectacular setting. Great pubs with live music and some nice restaurants in the area. If you want a bigger town maybe Killaloe which is at the mouth of Lough Derg or maybe Portumna which is at the start of the Lake. It is a beautiful area with many sights and much natural beauty.

Ballyvaughan is just over three hours:

It's situated in north Clare and a good base for:

Killaloe is 2.5 hours:
