Ease of finding place to stay end of May without reservation

We want to leave 3 or 4 nights unbooked in the middle of our trip so we can just wing it and decide what we want to fill in to balance out our trip. Last May when we visited Greece we were happy that we'd left some unbooked time because where we ended up wasn't what we would have initially assumed we would be doing. And, when we did this, we found some very nice places to stay that didn't have an internet presence and didn't advertise and were happy to offer good prices to walk in clientel.

Our hope is that we can do what we did there, which was to just drive up to the area we decided on, scope it out, and see some availability signs so we could just knock on the door. Will this tactic work for Ireland at this time of year? Is it also possible to find any self-catering places that would take someone for 3 or 4 nights on a walk-in basis, or would we only be able to find B & Bs? I know at one of our favorite vacation locales here in the US there are many smaller mom and pop type self-catering cottages that can be found off season and that are only known to those in the immediate area because they do no promotion whatsoever. Is Ireland the same? We'd be in the south west area. Thanks.

If you have an idea what area you intend to go to I'd prefer to book ahead, although the freedom of just landing somewhere and deciding that you want to stay there is nice.

If there is a festival or if you manage to hit the June bank Holiday weekend ,you may find it hard to get somewhere. I found that if I didn't have somewhere booked that a certain amount of time can be wasted looking for something decent.See list below:

Thanks for the thoughts. We won't be there on any holidays, so that is easier. I know what you mean about it taking time to find a place, and that is why we no longer just have one night stays unless it is the only possible option to make an itinerary work out for us.

Finding a self-catering short-term cottage let 'on the wing' is definitely going to be more difficult than a hotel or B+B at whatever time of year as most self-catering places do not have resident managers and/or owners here and you'd need to find the number to call (there may be a card in the window) once you have seen a place and then make your enquiries over the phone. You stand a better chance though with a hostel which in rural Ireland is another term for short-term, self-catering rural accommodation aimed at all types of independent travellers rather than the 'back-packing youth' that usually comes to mind with the word - they usually have a resident manager and offer accommodation on a double or family room basis with a shared kitchen and living room as well as in dormitories. Some are really very nice - here are a few examples of such hostels in Donegal and Sligo:

Do you have an idea of the approximate area/region of where you want to spend this 3-4 days? Maybe having a short-list of such accommodation places might help...

Thanks for defining a hostel for me, and it isn't what I would have thought of as a definition for such a place. Now I can include those in what I'd be looking for. We are thinking we'd probably be looking in the Dingle area, the Burren area or the Killarnehy Park area. So, your idea of having a couple places in mind is probably a good one.

A B&B or hostel is definitely a better option and you will find some great little places off the beaten track. It is worth checking out the prices of hotels in small villages as they are usually family run and would be glad of your business and may do you a good price.

Here are some quirky places:
