three day roadtrip from Dublin

Can anyone suggest a two night / three day roadtrip out of Dublin? We don't want to go vast distances and spend all our time in car. Our wish list is stunning scenery, ocean, lakes, rivers etc., charming small towns, lively pubs, good craic, but would prefer to avoid the really crowded and touristy areas (even though we are tourists ourselves). We were considering Galway / Connemara area or Sligo / Donegal area but are open to any suggestions. We hope to rent a car from Dublin, but are finding them extremely pricey for a large vehicle (6 adults).

You could get one of the three regular bus services across to Galway and take tours from there or hire a car for a couple of days in Galway to do your own thing. Connamara/Kylemore Abbey and Burren/Cliffs of Moher
