Dingle or Wicklow/Wexford

Hi,

We are trying to decide whether to spend a day/night in Dingle or make a stop in Wicklow and stay the night in Wexford this month? Unfortunately we won't have time to do both. What is there to do and see in these places? Thanks!

Sorry, sf, I can't quite work this out. Where are you travelling from? Where are you travelling to? How does Dingle connect with Wicklow or Wexford?

As what to see or do there is tons of information in the relevant forums.

It very much depends on where you're travelling from. If you're travelling from Dublin, then Dingle is too far away to only go for one night, in my opinion. It can take five hours to drive from Dublin.

These are our 2 itineraries that we are trying to decide between. My husband wants to hike at The Burren and 12 Bens so I think we need to cut out either Dingle or Wicklow/Wexford to be able to do that. I don't want to leave our luggage in the car so I would like to have a base in Galway for our belongings during these hikes.

Plan 1-eliminates Wicklow & Wexford includes 12 Bens

Saturday: Dublin

Sunday: Leave Dublin AM, Drive to Waterford

Monday: Leave Waterford, Drive to Kilkenny, Visit Carlow

Tuesday: Leave Kilkenny, Drive to Cork

Wednesday: Stay in Cork, Visit Kinsale during the day

Thursday: Stay in Cork, Visit Killarney during the day

Friday: Leave Cork, Drive to Dingle

Saturday:  Leave Dingle, Drive to Galway-spend day in Galway

Sunday:  Go hiking at 12 Bens during the day

Monday: Cliffs of Moher, Hiking at The Burren

Tuesday: Leave Galway in afternoon, Stay night in Shannon

 Wednesday: Leave from Shannon Airport

Plan 2-eliminates Dingle includes 12 Bens

Saturday: Dublin

Sunday: Leave Dublin AM, Drive to Wicklow & onto Wexford

Monday: Leave Wexford, Drive to Waterford

Tuesday: Leave Waterford, Drive to Kilkenny, Visit Carlow

Wednesday: Leave Kilkenny, Drive to Cork

Thursday: Stay in Cork, Visit Kinsale during the day

Both itineraries look ok to me except you're not leaving a lot of room for each area. Lots of rushing around trying to do some hiking, not enough time to relax and really have a good time.

whichever plan you go with is way too busy, but the only part I can give you advice on is Thursday on plan 1 (Friday on plan 2) , to drive from Cork to Killarney for the day then back to Cork for the night and out again to Dingle (or Galway) is just backtracking, its putting at least four hours totally unnecessary driving into your week. Stay in Cork,ok, then go to Killarney, ok, but not back to Cork that night.

So what are your suggestions for making our itinerary not so busy but still try to take in as much of Ireland as we can?

"Sunday: Leave Dublin AM, Drive to Wicklow & onto Wexford

Tuesday: Leave Waterford, Drive to Kilkenny, Visit Carlow

Wednesday: Leave Kilkenny, Drive to Cork "

Makes more sense to go Dublin, Wicklow, Carlow, Kilkenny,Wexford then across on the little ferry from Duncannon to Passage in Waterford, from Waterford to Cork.

If you want any ideas for Carlow, let me know.

You sorta have the right idea. It appears to me to be too much uprooting and driving in the earlier part of your visit. I like your Cork and Galway plans. It looks to me like you are short changing Dublin a bit. Maybe one anchor location between Dublin and Cork should do it. The short days will really cramp you. Decide on your anchor locations and make a list of things to do at each location and then choose when you get to each location depending on weather, energy, etc. Reeelaax and enjoy.
