There are a number of Tesco stores in Dublin which offers lower running costs and better reception on 95% of the whole Island.

We arrived at the Dublin Airport. Near the exits were 2 different mobile phone companies. Both were staffed by helpful sales people. Both charged just for the 'charge' on the prepaid sim card. Easy to get and cheap. Refills available at most convenience stores.

I agree, it's great to have a sim in your phone upon arriving - BUT within 5 minutes of clearing customs we each had an 'Irish' sim in our phones for 30E (for both) and that came with 30E in talk time. We also got the same company so we could call each other for free 24/7, Calls within Ireland were fairly cheap. After getting 2 flat tires and needing to call for help, we were greatful for having an Ireland phone number. Just MHO

So you bought the sim card for 30E and it included 30E in talk time? Is that correct? And, do you remember roughly the rate per minute? Thank you!

You shouldn't have to pay for any SIM, all the mobile providers in Ireland will give you one for free provided that you "top it up" with credit which you would have to do anyway to use.

What Tony has suggested is the best advice, go with Tesco mobile, they have the best rates and really good coverage. That €30 you spent on credit will get you €90 in credit with Tesco mobile if you top up by card.

Can I use the Tesco sim card also in France?

I will be flying to France after spending time in Ireland.

If not, is there a "European" sim card?

What is the cost for the sim card from the Vodaphone shop at the Dublin airport?

No and No. Meteor offer a roaming charge negated sim which you can use in Europe as you do in Ireland. But to be honest we were on contract with Meteor a few years ago and travelling to the UK the phone simply did not function on the Meteor approved Tmobile channel and we had to pay to roam on the UK02 frequency. I would go with an Irish sim for Ireland and a French sim for France.

All Irish sim cards are free when purchasing credit Vodafone are a long way from being the cheapest when it comes to pay as you go.
