Secret Ireland: Lough Derg Area

Continuing the Secret Ireland series in the Irish Independent, Pol O Conghaile focuses on Lough Derg - mostly along the Co Clare and Co Tipperary border area.

However, he begins to the north in Portumna, Co Galway and includes Beal Boru Fort, near Killaloe; Garykennedy, Holy Island and Mountshannon.

Lots of outdoor activities: walking, cycling, water skiing and kayaking as well as a number of historical and heritage sites:

You can check out the area later this month at the East Clare Walking Festival (21st-23rd October, 2011):

Thanks for the article Uasal. It has been a decent year in the unknown midland parts and there have been a few more visitors than recent years. Perhaps this article will bring a few more.

There is another source source of information, somewhere to pitch a tent or park a caravan to be found not too far away above the Lough's western side.

Thanks Uasal! This is a really lovely area.

The boattrip over to Holy Island three years ago (thanks for the tip, ferdia...) on a glorious sunny day certainly was one of the year's highlights.

Thanks for posting the link, Uasal.

I actually read the article in the paper and was delighted to see East Clare being highlighted for a change.

It is so beautiful over around Lough Derg. I am lucky enough to drive over that way on a fairly regular basis, but it always shocks me that a huge number of people from Clare have never actually been there.
